[S.u.S.E. Linux] Problems with X et al
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi there, I've just installed Linux with a SuSE 5.1 CD I got from a magazine. As I'm new to it, I have to go from scratch, and have being trying before deciding (RH 5.0, SuSE 5.2,...). Now, the start was OK, but when I tried to run the x-windows (startx), I got the following error: There is no link /var/X11R6/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_xxxx which is the binary of the installed X-server. Please link the files as mentioned above or install the X-server and run xf86config again. I'm aborting now. Needless to say, there is no such above mention as to how to link it. Sorry if you think this question is extremely basic, but I don't really know what to do. I've tried so far a RH 5.0 distribution, and it worked ok. I feel RH to be easier to install, and manage, although I'm sure SuSE has outstanding points as well (yet to be seen by myself). Another problem was to add a new user (I've been told not to use root as general, but to create a diferent user)... with RH I just had to type: adduser <username> passwd <username> this didn't work here ??? Thanks in advance for any "good-willing" help (sorry about the "good will" stuff, but I just saw some people "arguing" to each other here. Run 'yast' and setup your X-server I guess. Regards, Ruud. -- Next time you wave, use all your fingers. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

you need to configure x with either XF86Setup or xf86config. you can add users through the "useradd" and "passwd" commands, or through user adminisrtation. both user administration and X setup are achieved through yast. just type "yast" and follow the appropriate paths.
