I am sorry but this is getting to me AGAIN !!!!! First of all I installed Open Office on SuSE 7.0 and never had any problems, but could not install 7.0 on my new pentium so I went and got 8.1, so far I feel as if I am banging my head against a wall each day. I left SuSE with Open office sarting up all the time and locking up the computer. I went back to lastest Mandrake, and could not do some of the things I could do in SuSE so I tried the lastest Red hat, I never got to log on the first time, the install got stuffed up. So I am back to SuSE, and already I feel like dumping SuSE and sticking with Microsucks software at least with that you just get the "blue screen of death" and have to reinstall the crapp each year,, Now comes back to SuSE the first install, it dad Kinternet next to the clock, but now I each time I install it comes up as another window, in tring to fix that I removed somethings I tried and now lost the 1, 2, 3, 4 to switch between the desktops. And each time I try to start "Kinternet" it says it is already runing and is a small icon on the panel, well I would use it if I could see the dam thing. -- From Eric
You should try with hardware adequate to run linux on, or hardware that's not faulty in any way. Seems to me that the crap is your box, not the distros. I've been running all of those mentioned without a glitch.
I am sorry but this is getting to me AGAIN !!!!!
Bought cheap ram last week, you should have seen the mess it caused. Actually had to do a rebuild-tree with reiserfs. That sucked to say the least, but at least it worked..And witha new RAM chip all is well... So yes check your hardware. Matt

I'll second that. Running the memory test that is on the SuSE install found that the memory was bad. By the way, is that little memeory test utility available for install to a boot floppy so I could make a memory test floppy? Damon Register

Yes, it is. See http://www.memtest86.com

Yes it is. Can't recall the homepage, try googling for 'memtest86 home page', pretty sure that's how I go it. Best Fergus

That's not an answer at all. It's exactly what I would expect to read from someone who calls themself an MVP over in the M$ newsgroups. Your top-posting doesn't allay my doubts anymore either.
I am sorry but this is getting to me AGAIN !!!!!
I know this is a simple thing, but have you right-clicked on the panel and looked at the 'add applet' menu? You may have accidentally removed them from the panel. And why won't 7.0 install on your pentium machine? What kinds of problems/errors are you having/getting? John

Just a note. If you've tried 3 of the major distro's (RH, SuSE, and Mandrake) and your still having problems - eg, SuSE tends to lock with certain progs/whatever, Mandrake isn't doing all you want but seems to boot, RH had fails completely, then I strongly suggest posting your hardware. It helps to know what Mobo, vid-card, snd-card, nic/modem, cpu, ram, etc, etc... your running. You see, when I personally hear a situation such as this (3 major distro's failing) I strongly tend to think that this is a hardware problem. I know you have posted that this is a software problem in your view and you may or may not be correct in this assumption. However, in order to get a better idea and present more viable solutions to your problem it helps to understand the complete environment your using. In my case I had a promise 133 ATA/RAID controller on my motherboard that was the latest revision. The previous revision was handled by the 2.4.18 kernel but not mine. This has been solved with the newer kernel in 8.1 - this drove me absolutely nuts. However, I have friends with old and/uncommon hardware, some of which is specific to M$ windows (e.g. like the winmodem) or was just off the wall (IMHO) and was the problem - they too thought it was software and not hardware. So, in order to understand (or at least to attempt to) what is really going posting your hardware, any log files such as the boot.log, Xsession.errors, etc goes a long way in helping other to see any potential problems that maybe happening. I know how frustrating this can be - we all want it to just work, we are willing to futz around to get things setup but when hitting a deadend it is easy to lose our objectiveness. The key is to step back and think about the problem in terms of what the system can tell you. Linux is good for no other reason than it often will tell you what went hayware in the form of logs and console messages, etc. Try to post all the technical info you can -- it really helps. Good luck and Cheers, Curtis. :) On Tuesday 17 December 2002 03:25, Eric wrote:

Here, Here! Such BAD MANNERS! Ken Hough
Seems like YOU'RE the biggest moron here, Eric. Since you can't keep a decent attitude *AND* you're evidently totally unable to set up 3 different software suites that are absolutely self-installing, self-configuring *AND* thoroughly tested on more or less any hardware you can find. Go get a life, then a functional hardware platform. Oh, and perhaps you should take a crash-course in decency and behaviour when you're at it anyway.
