[S.u.S.E. Linux] Netscape problem.
I'm having a problem with Communicator 4.5. The error is: "Unable to start a java applet: Can't find 'java40.jar' in your CLASSPATH. Read the release notes and install 'java40.jar properly before restarting.' Then it shows the current CLASSPATH, which is not correct. I read all the docs I could find, and still don't have a clue as to where and/or how to change this. Thanks in advance, Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. You should set MOZILLA_HOME to the directory netscape was installed. In my /etc/profile: MOZILLA_HOME=/opt/netscape export MOZILLA_HOME Fred A. Miller wrote:

You should set MOZILLA_HOME to the directory netscape was installed.
In my /etc/profile: MOZILLA_HOME=/opt/netscape export MOZILLA_HOME
This is true, but you also need export CLASSPATH=/opt/netscape/java in your /etc/profile

I have not set CLASSPATH. Netscape uses MOZILLA_HOME to get the correct CLASSPATH. At least on my system... froZen wrote:

No, all this did was to append the classpath at the beginning. I don't have a clue as to why this happened. I.e., it added "/usr/Communicator/java/classes" to the classpath which is at this point a very long statemet, repeating dir's several times. Thanks, Fred froZen wrote:

I explicitly unset my CLASSPATH environment variable when I run Netscape. I've found that I only need to have MOZILLA_HOME set. When I was working on applets I'd find that I would get some strange behavior in Netscape because it would load Java .class files from my local hard disk rather than pulling them down from the HTTP server. I guess this is really only a problem if you happen to be developing and testing applets on the same machine like I was. Thanks....tried it, and I still get the same error. I also don't have the spell checker....that is, it should work, but doesn't. Fred Robert Williams wrote:
