I honestly don't know. I hate to ask this - especially in a Linux group, but have you rebooted?
I had this happen one time. The funny thing was, I reinstalled my kde3.5, and I got the ability to play mp3 files back again.
...like I said, sunspots. I wonder, then if the KDE libraries have something to do with it -- kai www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

You might check that all the packages mentioned here are installed, or upgrade them.
