[S.u.S.E. Linux] StarOffice Advice
I'm looking for advice about downloading and installing StarOffice..... System is a P-133, 48megs with SuSE 5.2 and KDE pre-2. Any thoughts/comparisons on SO vs Applix? Can the (Caldera) OpenLinux rpm of SO be installed on SuSE? If not, does anyone know where I can get an rpm of SO that will install on SuSE? TIA Sandy - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Sandy, I downloaded and installed the standard Linux distro from the star office site. All went fine, however it is about a 54 meg d/l ... It seems like a really nice suite for the price (free for personal use) it does take a while to boot though ( I am running a Celeron 266 @ 400 mhz 96 megs ram and suse 5.2 with 2.0.34 kernel). Don't know about the caldera package. I have it here on cd, but didn't try it as it was an old version I got with Open Linux (which I tried and didn't like) some time ago. Fred, Do you know what we might expect. I think it is a pretty killer set of apps so far. Takes a bit getting used to after spending to much time in Windoze though ... I was told that it will be faster, NEW CODE, NEW GUI...i.e., a WIN95 "look," which I can live with. I've given them a number of things that MUST be done in the browser of the new release, as fonts aren't quite right, and there's NO plugins!! There's also the same limitations in file size that can be read into any module like Office95 that should be fixed. There are new features etc., but I don't know what all of them are. I bought OS from them awhile ago.....GREAT application and am very much looking forward to version 5. Fred -- Fred A. Miller, Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. -- I have run SO on linux and OS/2 and while I like the feature set, I dont particularly care for the behavior of the program at stealing resources and keeping them after it closes. Applix while it does not have the "flash" seems somewhat kinder to resources. I saw that a third fixpack is out for SO 4 but its quite large (for me). I am hoping, after reading the applixware list, that applix sees that providing more enhanced filters and other featuresets will provide a more productive work area. SO 4 is nice but it suffers from that thing I want away from -- windowitis. I dont want a office suite with win95 looks. If I want a office suite that looks like win95, I run the Office Pro97 suite. What I would like is: *modern features like import/export of modern wp/graphics/spreadsheets *good graphics handling abilities *integration at the file and workspace levels to include a unique multiple document interface. I have some ideas about what I would like to see in this area but its hard to write them down. *Nice hard disk footprint. Applix now is somewhat beefy while SO is less. Admittedly I do use the clipart and a few other features *better gui html editor. I can use a variety of tools but sometimes like to play with a gui editor. ImO the SO4 suite suffers from trying to be too many things at one time. Perhaps the shared codebase or the shared development brings this liability. Michael E. Resource issues are supposed addressed in verion 5 due at the end of Aug. or 1st of Sept. Yes....Applix is nice, but it simply lacks too many features. We may or may not like the Windoze look, which will get even more so in SO 5, however, it IS a smart move on SO's part as more and more people switch to Linux. I'm not as concerned about how it "looks" as how efficent the code is, bugs are removed, and features it has.

Agree with the above!
ImO the SO4 suite suffers from trying to be too many things at one time.
No, not really.....it just needs to do it BETTER.
Perhaps the shared codebase or the shared development brings this liability.
No......it's that for the sake of compatibility it loads a BUNCH of libs into RAM, which is a BIG mistake!!!!!! This is supposed to be fixed with version 5, which is all new code. Fred -- Fred A. Hi Fred- Thanks for the note regarding SO and the new release. I would like to see a SO suite which would not load so many things at start. I think that SO5 sounds like an advance which might prove interesting. I do wish that they would cut back on the windows95 physcial ui stuff though; but I guess I can understand the desire to go in that direction. -- Michael E. The ui is marketing, and nothing more.....it's needed. Another thing I've alerted SO about is a driver conflict. If you're using the OSS audio drivers (VERY good!) you need to start up SO BEFORE you start the OSS module/driver. If you don't, SO will error on connecting to your ISP. Fred -- Fred A. I ftp'd it myself over a reg modem connection, and it took something like five hours! Caldera (I think) has it on a cd-rom that they'll ship to you for $20. That's a pretty good deal. I run it on my AMD k5 pr-133 (64 megs of RAM), but it does indeed startup slowly. I don't use it _that_ much, cuz I like to dabble with LaTeX... Mark --- Perry Moon wrote:
