Re: [SLE] SuSE 7.3 install with SiS 900 ethernet card won't work.
Well, I think SuSE did find it. It was detected and the driver was installed. Plus, the SiS 900 was also detected in the other installs as well. It seems to me to be a driver issue. If it is, how does one go about diagnosing a driver in SuSE? BTW, I know from the Xandros install, that not only was the card detected and the driver installed, but it was also assumed that the driver was functioning, as the system tried pinging to determine if the connection was active. I don't know if SuSE does the same, but in both cases, the system has been unable to get a DNS assigned. Cheers, Brian PL O'Smith wrote:

Thanks for your response. Yes, 7.3 installs the 2.4 kernel, but according to a posting from August 2002 on the list, the 2.2 kernel should be used. Either way, neither kernel seems to make a difference in getting the SiS 900 driver to work. As to the positioning of the ethernet card, yes, the card on the Celvin is also built into the motherboard, however, the driver doesn't seem to work for some reason. Everything worked fine on the Celvin under Win 98 SE, until it went south. Cables, computer positioning is exactly the same. Nothing has been touched except for trying various system configurations. I have tried installing Xandros 1, Mandrake Power Pack 9 and now SuSE 7.3 Pro, and none of the SiS 900 drivers work with the Celvin for some odd reason. Below is an inline listing of the Celvin specs:
==================== Ok, Brian, Then have you checked the BIOS of the machine to see if it is being activated? The only reasons, I could see that SuSE didn't find it are not turned on in the BIOS or it's broken.
