I hate to have to say this about 7.1 but...
SuSE have really put themselves in a fix. I don't see how they will ever put out another distribution that will match the magnitude of improvement in organization and concept that they have achieved in this release. I was _NOT_ expecting anything this nice. The organization of YaST2 is simply incredible. More importantly it is clearly nothing but a foundation for future improvement. "Job well done doesn't" come close to assessing how I feel about this latest release. The people at SuSE who have been watching me rant for the past few week must have been biting their tongues and laughing their butts off at me. They already got the message. I have the feeling there is much more yet to be discovered. I can't wait till this thing gets wrapped up in the KDE2.1. You folks who are trying to save a few pennies by waiting for the download are really missing out. It's better than you might expect. {;-)> Thanks again SuSE, Steve

I second this. The graphical lilo is a nice touch too! Ken -- "We can build a better product than Linux..." -- Microsoft VP Jim Allchin

Aye aye! No kidding. SuSE, would you please consider adding a progress patch? Like the one that' sbeen done for Stormix and Debian? It would be so cute to have geeko walk across your screen, or get bigger or something, as the system boots up. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, the "progress patch" is an option kernel module (not in the main kernel tree) that shows a GUI while botting. All the text messages that we're used to seeing are simply written to the second console instead of the first (so if you want to see them you can just hit [ALT]+[F2]) It would be a really nice finishing touch, especially after that nice new lilo :-) Would you please even consider adding it as an "update" to 7.1, so that I don't have to wait 4 months for it? :-) Pretty please with cherries on top. Ok, I'm getting really childish here..... hehe, oh well, ya gotta let the kid inside ya come out once in a while :-)

I have SuSE 7.1 pro running on three systems now. A dell laptop and two self-builts. The laptop is, believe it or not, the easiest one. Everything works on it without much tweaking. Its a little Dell Ls ultralight. The self-builts have 384mb with amd chips. The last version of SuSE I installed was 7.0. I don't upgrade my stuff ever; so I just blast everything away and put new stuff on it. AFter I do the basic installation though, I rarely use the cd's again. Just as rarely do I use YAST or SAX. My feeling about 7.1 is that it is very nice and with the desktop + workstation installation, I have gone about my way self-compiling this and that, removing KDE and installing some gnome stuff, updating windowmaker, etc. Of all the ones I have seen, 7.1 seems up there in terms of use and functionality. The ability to have reiserfs, the patched 2.4 kernel, and X4 all combine to make a nice toolkit. I do have some fond memories of SuSE 5.0 though :) Thanks SuSE! -- Michael Perry mperry@tsoft.com ------------------

mmmm.... tempting! ;-) (which should tell you there is not enough in it to worry about.... My daughter has a 'pumpkin' on the way and my wife and I started a "pumpkin" account for our spare change.) JLK On Tuesday 27 February 2001 19:48, Avi Schwartz wrote:

Ok.. This is now getting really annoying :-). I have not got mine yet, gosh darn it! Now I wish I had it more than ever. Is it worth installing the 2.4 Kernel from 7.1 and then upgrading to 2.4.2? Well, I cannot believe the response thus far...Yeah if you have not put KDE 2.1 on yet then you are in for a surprise too, because that rocks... Matt On Tue, 27 Feb 2001, Steven T. Hatton wrote:

I know what you mean. It was almost unbearable to see all the "I just got it! Wow this is cool!!!" posts before this morning. I won't say it's worth the wait because I hate it when people tell me that...;^)

Most def! I'm not a big KDE fan (WindowMaker rulez!), but I was thoroughly impressed by it.
