[opensuse] WARNING! re latest update to OpenOffice from Novell
Just to be sure, do not allow YaST/zypper (or even smart) to update your (32-bit) 11.1 installation of OpenOffice to the latest version - leave it at 3.0.0.9-1.11. I allowed zypper to update it this morning and now I have one big f***-up, and lost the ability to run OpenOffice. I've spent the past 9 hours trying to figure out how to get my working OO back and the only conclusion I have now come to is for me to use 'rpm -e OpenOffice*' and reinstall from the DVD (with the BuildService STABLE for OO *disabled* in the repos). Now your mileage re this may vary and you may even have had no problems with YaST updating your OO on your system - which is fine. But if you are yet to update OO then watch out for the list of the dependency errors, and then simply do not attempt to update OO. I have had issues with the GoOO version of OOo not working with extensions, having weird known bugs that are not in the trunk version etc. Consistently, I find that the vanilla OOo is more stable and more usable - yes at the expense of missing out on a few extras that Novell puts into the GoOO version... but... wonky behavior (eg crashing repeatedly when doing search/replace on styles)... vs stable OOo that works... I'll take stable OOo any day. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I am sure he installed from the 11.1 STABLE repo, and I can confirm the 3.0.1 packages there do not work, something that was a surprise to me as well. I installed the x86_64 packages, but none would start up. Looking at versions showed some 3.0.0.9 packages still installed, which when uninstalled it complained about the localization and not being able to determine language (not good for US English). Reinstalling from the DVD restored it without much problem. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah yes, I got that as well just now. Reinstalling the l10n package from the STABLE repo made it work. Bug 471280, but someone beat me to it. I am interested as to what you have installed now, if it is working for you. I needed to get some work done besides bug reporting (which I also did BTW), that is why I downgraded. I had already tried everything I could to rectify the problem, including uninstalling all 3.0.0.9 packages (mentioned in your other email), and I could tell it was a localization problem, but I had already installed l10n-en-US package and could see no other one with en-US that could help. I have the 64 bit version. And I also had the l10n-en-US package (and a few other i10n packages) installed, but after I uninstalled the other three packages I mentioned, I reinstalled them. Well, I am still having problems. I do not see the problem. I had uninstalled all the 3.0.0.9 packages and updated the others. When that did not work, I went through your list above and reinstalled a couple, the ure and libs-extern. The only thing I see different are you have a couple more languages. Any ideas? BTW, I believe the ure and the libs-extern also has files that collide with the main OpenOffice_org package, so I uninstalled them again and reinstalled OpenOffice_org. joe@jmorris:~> rpm -qa | grep OpenOffice OpenOffice_org-thesaurus-en-20060111-5.1 OpenOffice_org-l10n-en-US-3.0.1.2-3.1 OpenOffice_org-templates-labels-a4-1.0-5.1 OpenOffice_org-calc-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-Quickstarter-1.0-712.1 OpenOffice_org-openclipart-3-2.4 OpenOffice_org-math-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-templates-en-3.0-2.1 OpenOffice_org-base-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-mailmerge-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-writer-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-draw-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-kde-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-help-en-US-3.0.1.2-3.1 OpenOffice_org-templates-presentation-layouts-3.0-2.1 OpenOffice_org-filters-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-converter-3.0-1.24 OpenOffice_org-pyuno-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-impress-3.0.1.2-2.1 OpenOffice_org-branding-openSUSE-3.0-24.16 OpenOffice_org-templates-labels-letter-1.0-5.1 OpenOffice_org-hyphen-20080929-38.1 OpenOffice_org-icon-themes-3.0.1.2-3.1 OpenOffice_org-3.0.1.2-2.1 joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-thesaurus-en joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-l10n-en-US .......T /usr/share/ooo3/link-to-ooo-home joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-templates-labels-a4 joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-calc joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-Quickstarter joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-openclipart joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-math joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-templates-en joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-base joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-mailmerge joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-writer joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-draw joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-kde joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-help-en-US joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-templates-presentation-layouts joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-filters joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-converter joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-pyuno joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-impress joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-branding-openSUSE joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-templates-labels-letter joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-hyphen joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org-icon-themes joe@jmorris:~> rpm -V OpenOffice_org -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Those two I didn't even realize I still had. I had a functioning (32bit) ooo install from the DVD, then I added the STABLE repo and selected all available updates (I clicked on each manually, because of the architecture change, to make sure it was all done correctly) Once I had updated all packages that were available in STABLE, I couldn't start ooo anymore. Then I deleted those three packages I mentioned before. Then I got the error message about the missing language file, so I selected the l10n files for reinstall. After this it worked That was the whole procedure I went through, from start to finish. You're right that there is no one-stop solution, but there are a few options Some packagers (too few) set the rpm PACKAGER variable rpm -q --qf "%{PACKAGER}\n" packagename The changelog is also a place to look. Where to find name of packager as normal user? I think that is known, but still not solved problem. </snip> I want to thank everyone on this thread, between your comments I was finally able to get OpenOffice 3.0.1.2 installed and working:
I ran into this this morning. I'm KDE 4.1.3, openSUSE 11.1.. 1. when the dependecnces came up I said go ahead and make the changes and do the update (YaST2). 2. It then installed 3.0.1.2 OK. When I tried starting the application it kept telling me it could not start it. I went back into YaST and deleted all references to the old version of OpenOffice (some were still installed). Still would not start. I went back in an reinstalled the language package (was mentioned in one of the items in this thread).
We did not release an OpenOffice_org update via our regular update channels.
Have you added the openSUSE BS OpenOffice org repo?
Ciao, Marcus
Yes, this was added from the Add repos in YaST's Software Repositories on the day I installed 11.1 on my test system when 11.1 was first released and then last week when I installed 11.1 on my "main" system (see my penultimate para. above). Obviously some control file is happy with recognising 11.0 but has a hernia when it comes to 11.1 and stuffs everything up for 11.1. It works on 11.1 as well. There were a few issues with dependencies which need to be reported to the packager though. e.g. OpenOffice_org-libs-gui, OpenOffice_org-libs-core and OpenOffice-components do not seem to have replacements in 3.0.1, so they should have been removed, but weren't. They were still around at version 3.0.0.9, causing conflicts. Well when installing here all the *-extensions and the *filters-optional RPMs are marked for deletion but they are not deleted and cause the dependency problems. OK, they can be manually deleted but there is one more RPM which simply cannot be removed because it is needed by some 3009 files (which will be replaced by the update anyway); this RPM is OpenOffice_org-l10n-extras-3.0.0.9-1.11.noarch and it simply CANNOT be removed because 'rpm -e' comes back and states that the damn thing is not installed- when it is! :-) :-( . And I will try removing the ones you mention above. Ciao. -- "I do not instruct the uninterested; I do not help those who fail to try. I forgot about the language problem that followed, so see also my reply to Joe. I'm not sure why you get dependency issues on the -extensions and -filters, I don't see anything requiring those. Here they uninstalled without any complaints. Exactly which packages are you installing, and which dependency problems are you seeing? <Shakes head in disbelief> Just had a look in Software Management and found that the OO files have been now updated to 3012 - which was not the case when I posted my original message. Looks like the automatic daily Online Update 'jumped in' and did some updating while I was watching the DVD. But simply
rpm -e OpenOffice_org-libs-gui OpenOffice_org-libs-core OpenOffice-components
made everything work again
Anders
I deleted the files you mentioned above and OO3.0.1.2 now appears to work.
I'll now go and see which files WERE updated a few hours ago -- but I do know that a number of 3009 files were still installed the last time I looked (before I gave my self a break and watched a DVD :-) ).
<Shakes head in disbelief>
Just had a look in Software Management and found that the OO files have been now updated to 3012 - which was not the case when I posted my original message. Looks like the automatic daily Online Update 'jumped in' and did some updating while I was watching the DVD.
(All I now need to do is to find out why I have been getting this for the past several days:

Thanks, Anders, I'll look at all this again in the morning after some sleep because at the moment the mind is kinda confused. When I try to delete it using YaST's S/ware Manager the message comes back stating that a host of files will be altered to satisfy dependency. If I try to manually delete compiz-kde4 I get the message that compiz-decorator depends on compiz-kde4 but when I go to also delete *-decorator I am informed by rpm -e that decorator is not installed :-) . I have attached a screenshot of the list of these files (I assume that it will get thru here otherwise I'll have to send it to privately - the file is 186K big).

I see that the attachment did go thru. Last 'night' when I tried to delete with YaST compiz-kde4 I thought that I also got another screen showing at least one additional file which had to be "altered"- so I 'told' YaST to "Continue" with the deletion of compiz-kde4 in order to get that second message. Well, I didn't get that second message/screen and YaST started to delete and "alter" all the other files mentioned in the attachment! :-D Hitting the Abort button or trying to use the "X" to exit does zilch, nothing, NADA, so I used CTRL-ALT-ESC to terminate YaST's Online Update. But, of course, I simply was not quick enough and compiz-kde4 - plus a couple of other files mentioned in the attached list - got deleted. It now appears that the problem with respect to compiz-kde4 has been eliminated - albeit thru a mistake and not by design :-) .

Yes, compiz-decorator is not a package, it is a property, something provided by a package. In this case, either compiz-kde4 or compiz-gnome. You can see this with rpm -q --whatprovides compiz-decorator However, zypper rm compiz will get rid of it all for you Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Urgh, urgh, urgh, there were wrong dependencies. The following steps worked for me: 1. Have the default OOo-3.0 from openSUSE-11.1 3. add the extra OpenOffice.org repository in YaST2 2. start "Software Management" in YaST2 3. select "OpenOffice_org" for update; agree to remove "OpenOffice_org-l10n-extras" and other packages to remove the conflict 4. select "OpenOffice_org-ure" to delete (popup menu when you press the right mouse button); agree to delete few more dependent packages 5. select "OpenOffice_org-libs-external" to delete 6. press the "accept" button; agree with the automatic changes I am going to improve dependencies of the OOo-3.0.1 packages to avoid these problems. No 3.0.0.9 packages are needed with the version 3.0.1.2. All 3.0.0.9 packages should be updated or removed. It is possible that it does not work for you because you removed the 3.0.0.9 packages too late. I am afraid that it might have removed some compat symlinks from /usr/share to /usr/lib. The symlinks allows architecture independent packages to safe space on the installation sources. I would like to fix OOo to find these files in /usr/share directly in the future but it might need lots changes. The symlinks work fine in normal situations but there was a mess because of the broken dependencies this time :-( It works much better with the packages in the OpenOffice_org:UNSTABLE repository, see http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#OpenOffice.org_U... I have fixed it already on Monday. Unfortunately, the packages are still not available in the OpenOffice_org:STABLE for openSUSE-11.1-x86_64. The are some problems in BS to make them public, see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=471280. I hope that they will be ready within next two days. It is a nightmare.
