RE: [SLE] Force x86-64 - XEON FSB 800Mhz
[ ... ]
It is not compatible with x86_64 AFAIK. It is a ia64 architecture. x86_64 is for the AMD64 line (Opteron, amd64, amd64 FX).
Actually, it will install and use the x86_64 packages if you use the DVD. X86_64 is generic, and it will install the generic 64 bit architecture kernel (just like for an opteron system).
Another question : does anybody know if I'll have a perfomance gain using this packages or it will not be important for a qmail server? Performance gain over what?
My opinion is that you will see most benefits in the area of memory addressing -- so if you want to do something that will benefit from access to more than 4GB of physical memory -- it would be obvious. I don't think qmail would benefit from this. I don't know if there might be other benefits from 64 bit code that would be visible in qmail performance. [...] Thanks, Patrick W.
