It is not compatible with x86_64 AFAIK. It is a ia64 architecture. x86_64 is for the AMD64 line (Opteron, amd64, amd64 FX).

Actually, it will install and use the x86_64 packages if you use the DVD. X86_64 is generic, and it will install the generic 64 bit architecture kernel (just like for an opteron system).

My opinion is that you will see most benefits in the area of memory addressing -- so if you want to do something that will benefit from access to more than 4GB of physical memory -- it would be obvious.
