Ok, I'm another RedHat refugee due to their whole Fedora nightmare. But before I switch over to SUSE I had a question. Perhaps stupid, but information I need. Does SUSE have any kind of auto-update patching software like RedHats up2date for bug/security fixes? -Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "When angels go bad, they go worse than anyone. Suse has Yast to update with. It's funny, I hated redhat 9.0 but love fedora..My fedora box is running beautifully under a 2.6 kernel. You will LOVE SUSE though!! Walt

they have yast online update (YOU) or you can also setup aptget......not exactly the same as doing up2date, but they work pretty well. I use both distros, some clients have redhat, some suse...I install suse when I can, but I'll work on either one - work is work, you know?

APT works well for this.
I've seen several references to 'APT' but nothing that gave me clue as to what it is, until now. Could you give me a thumbnail sketch of APT and how it is used? Don Henson

Well, my apologies to the offended. I never had this remark before, but I have to agree that the fortune this time got unpolite. I'll take it off for this list purposes. Sergio -- I think my career is ruined!

That looks great. I realize that this is a SuSE list, but along with my SuSE servers I have some RedHat servers. Is anyone aware of something like this for RedHat? I read in a talkback on OSNews that Redhat has something call YUM. I would suggest a google search because I don't know much about it other then it's suppose to be like APT an what not. Also, you can use apt4rpm with Redhat as well. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Almost the same as with SuSE: * apt-rpm * yum * up2date BTW: With Fedora, RH is integrating yum and apt-repository support into up2date, also up2date doesn't require registration anymore. Also, under both SuSE and RH there still is Ximian's red-carpet and rcd. Ralf

Yup, and what's more it can be scheduled in which case it will just do it in the middle of the night and send root emails. This only applies to security updates, you won't come in and find a whole new system. SuSE patches security flaws in the older packages so that nothing is changed (dependencies) other than the security flaws are fixed. I've found it much more reliable than uptodate, and cheaper too. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

It also doesn't send information about your system (hardware, installed rpm list) back to the vendor, associated with your personal information (remember signing up for RHN on the first run of up2date?) to a closed-source server. Yes. It's called YOU, which I think stands for YaST Online Update, and you set it up during the installation setup or you can set it up later using YaST online update utility. Seems to work pretty well. Don Henson

The functionality Michael wants is achieved by setting "full automatic update" in YOU.
