[opensuse] 10.2 filesystem/install issue/problem/curiosity..
I'll start with some background information: I run a server using SuSE 9.2 and everything was great. I swapped out my server for one of my other machines and installed new hard drives. WIth this newer server, I downloaded the ISOs for openSuSE 10.2, burned them to CD and installed the new system. Now I am eying my old server in the corner wishing I had never switched. The "newer" system is an ASUS MoBo with an AMD Athlon 2500+ CPU and 576 MB of RAM (512+64) It used to run Windows XP but I built a new computer for that. The only thing I changed in this system were the hard drives. The entire install seemed to go smoothly. Everything looked very pretty when I booted for the first time and went through all my server settings for web and mail (such as I have them, which is not saying much). The problems: Some programs have no fonts.. Gimp Evolution Epiphany many others.. Some programs crash on load, KTorrent primarily, but also the "Login Window" manager when loaded directly from the KDE start menu, though it is fine when accessed through "Personal Settings > System Administration". And my LAN doesn't work at all. I compared all my configuration files between this setup and the old one (SuSE 9.2), used YAST for some of the automagic configurations where available, still no go. Desperate to try to find the error, I did a via internet full system update replacing and/or reinstalling pretty much everything. Let me reinterate that this was a clean install on new hard drives, with downloaded ISOs which checked out as good. Any ideas as to what went wrong? How I can fix it without wiping everything and starting over? The primary server functions that I use (web and mail) work and so I am reluctant to wiping the drives to reinstall. On another note, I used the internet install to upgrade my laptop from 9.2 to 10.2 and there are no issues there. All the programs load and run correctly. Any suggestions, other than "wipe and reinstall" would be appreciated. Surely, I can't be the first/only person to have had this hiccup. Thanks in advance. snip: sounds like you did everything right to fix this.

The gnome apps probably are missing some dependencies, libraries and/or fonts. If you used the 10.2 install repositories listed on the opensuse.org site for OSS, non-OSS, updates, KDE, GNOME, whichever, for the update then you should be good. That can fix weird problems like you seem to have. My best guess as to what may have happened is that the install wasn't as smooth as it seemed. I've had installs go bad and the resulting system just had too many unrelated to each other problems that a re-install seemed less time consuming than trying to fix it all. It worked. The 2nd time worked just fine. Same system hardware, same install media, different end results. I know others on this list have had similar experiences and on many different versions of SUSE. If you do the bare metal re-install go for a minimal install without your previous data. Add in the repositories and update the system. If its all working fine and none of these odd problems exist, then start adding in your old data/config. -- Stan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
