Changing directory name after editing login info
Should I simply change the home directory name of a user. (I have changed the login name of that user but his working directory /home/<user> remains the same).
In most cases, changing the name of the user's home directory to correspond with the login name is desirable, but may have some issues, especially if there is some symlinks or possibly NFS exports associated with the old one. Some other tricks is that you can have multiple entries in the password file for the same uid (but this is definitely NOT a recommended practice). On 7 Jun 2002 at 14:12, Info wrote:

You would also want to make sure that: - the entry in /etc/passwd is correct - the ownership of /home/<user> is correct For the first, you probably ought to make the change in the user management submodule of YaST. (You could edit /etc/passwd directly, but I'm sure that's not recommended.) For the second, run the command chown -R <user>.users /home/<user> as root. (It's probable that the ownership will be correct anyway, but it never hurts to be sure.) -tara
