RE: [SLE] KDE 3.x or Gnome 2.0?
Oh no... not again. Let's make some rules before we continue this thread: NO FLAME WAR PLEASE!!! For some reason every time there is a discussion about Gnome/KDE is ends in a flame war.... :-( So, here is my 'humble' opinion: I prefer KDE above GNOME. Of course my motivation is subjective, but I think KDE is a step further in evolution than GNOME. First of all, as a software engineer, I like the Qt concept very much. The GTK(+) is nice, but Qt is probably the most advanced (GUI) toolkit at the moment. And it's C++. And personally I think C++ is extremely useful when programming a windows enviroment. The KDE libraries on top of Qt makes sure that KDE applications have a unified interface, for example have a look at the 'file open' boxes. In Gnome this is somewhat primitive. KDE is more stable than GNOME. KDE has a great development environment (KDevelop). Although KOffice isn't finished yet, it is much more an office suite than GNOME office. There are more reasons, but my choice is basically made on the technical architecture. The biggest 'no' against KDE was the Qt licensing scheme. This is now fixed, but there are still folks who thinks that the Qt licensing scheme sucks. But again, I only look at the technical side of KDE.... Regards Harry

Hi,
Now that Gnome 2.0 has been released (and, from the screenshots, it loos better than previous) I wondered what people thought was the best and why?

And let me add something. Cut'n paste and the consistency among applications as far as being able to cut'n paste still sucks in KDE 3.0 :-( Salman

It does? Drag to select, middle mouse button to paste has never failed me yet. -- 8:38am up 50 days, 44 min, 1 user, load average: 0.39, 0.22, 0.12
I tried a few things. see that xconsole window that pops up when starting SuSE??? Select from it... paste into emacs...worked. Select from emacs into address bar of konq browser...worked Select from xconsole window and paste into konq....does not work. There are about a jillion inconsistencies I have experienced so far. Unfortunately I don't rmemeber where so that I can describe them. I wish I could disable this mouse-select-paste feature. It really sucks. Here's why: In the middle of my work I sometimes have to cut'n paste a URL into konq address bar. That way to do it in windows is to: 1) Select your new URL that you want to paste into address bar and do CTRL+C. 2) Double click inside the address bar to select the old URL. 3) do CTRL+V. This essentially replaces the old URL with the new one that you wantr In Linux this does not work. Becase step 2) automatically puts the old URL into the paste buffer---replacing the URL that you wanted to paste in the address bar. I either have to to to klipper and select the URL that I really wanted or replace step 2 with: 2b) Do not double click inside the address bar. Instead. Click inside. Go to the end of the URL by using the END key on the keyboard. Hold BACKSPACE for a couple of seconds to delete the old URL completely. And then paste the new URL into the window. Definitely this takes longer. I wish I could just disable this feature. Salman On Tuesday 02 July 2002 03:41, Derek Fountain wrote:

In KDE (not Linux) it works differently. You have to press the key "erase address bar" then paste your URL. So you do not waste time.

You do not need to.. I told you how it works in KDE. Praise

It works even better by just pasting in the main-window of your browser, you don't need the address-bar at all. Try /that/ in Windows.. (Works in _other_ browsers, not sure about konq). Definitely this takes longer. I wish I could just disable this feature. The quick way is to move over the web page currently displayed to a place where you aren't over a link and click the middle mouse button (if you are over the link, you end up openning a new window). This will do what you were talking about without having to highlight or anything. Works in Konqueror and Netscape (probably Mozilla too).
