[opensuse] [OT] GPS software on openSUSE/Linux
I have been using Navit as a live moving map driven by current locations provided by a GPS receiver. In fact, after a bit of fiddling, it works surprisingly well as a part of a larger measurement system, sharing the GPS with other interested apps. The use of Open Street Map data, and not requiring a connection to the internet to make live maps is really great. In fact, working without an I want to add a feature that, I fear, is not really what Navit wants to do. So I am exploring alternatives. I need to add the ability to have a planned route shown and that, as components of the route are completed, are indicated as being completed. In addition, the operator should be able to manipulate this status. How this is to be done is not carved in stone. I know that this is possible in the old ESRI ArcPad application. But I do not think this is supported on Linux anymore. An earlier version was written in Java and could be used. That is no longer available. So I am exploring open source alternatives. Are there any decent GPS live map applications that anyone is running on openSUSE that have this flexibility? I did try this a while back. Like a couple of years ago. It was nice, but at that time required raster images. I see that it now uses open street map data. I have to see if it can parse a live NMEA feed rather than gpsd. For various reasons we do not use gpsd. This is app is once again interesting. Thanks for reminding me
