OK. So the packages seems to be installed now.
then I start xf86config, fill all the fields and chose SVGA 256 color server.
then I did startx > startx.log
No need to do so. If you run "startx", it will automatically generate the log file ~/.X.err.
X didn't start I got a black screen (nothing on it ) and a little noise in the monitor ( tic tic tic ....) so I did CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.
I went back to text mode, it seems by looking at the log that the server I choose supports the G200 but I cannot go to X.
anyone as a clue ?? My monitor still works in the favorite resolution 1024*768, I test it starting that damm other OS you all know... but hate :)
Hmm. This is strange. Does ~/.X.err give you any errors? No, definetely not :) I'm just helping out on this list, as time permits. A plea to all of you: please refrain from bugging me personally with support questions. Post them to this list or to our installation support team, if you have a valid registration code. Thanks!
Hmm. This is strange. Does ~/.X.err give you any errors?
I will check this tonigh, my linux system is my personal computer, this account is my office account.
It seems to me that the monitor cannot catch the signal.
Maybe you configured a too high resolution of refresh rate?
BTW this part of configuring the Xserver is IMHO the trickiest part of tgetting Linux up (before the network of course)
Well, it heavily depends on your graphic card / monitor combination. Most models work out of the box without tweaking... nothing looks like errors in this file ( I didn't see the error word )

My card is a Matrox G200 My monitor is a Formac 17" the manufacturer docs for the monitor says H sync 24-64 Vsync 50-90 I have no docs with the card for the Hsync I choose custom settings and put "24-64". The Vsync was in the list . With such a monitor is it ok to choose for example "31.5-57", if the manufacturer manual says "24-64", as "31.5-57" is an interval "inside" the one from the manufacturer ????? I was unable to choose from the list of card, because I didn't foung the G200 in it, so I had to skip this step. For the autopolling of the clock it works when I choose VGA server, it doesn't when I choose SVGA. I start the X server yesterday but only in VGA ( I had chosen VGA server). I was willing to reconfigure from the inside using saX. But SaX definetely not works on my system ( the mouse is behaving strangely). I have to precise that before upgrading my hardware I had my system working smoothly with KDE in 1024 16 bpp ( with a poor S3 trio64V+ board, everything was fine but sax was not working either !!). The only :) piece of hardware I change are: motherboard ->> ABIT BX6 CPU ->> Intel Pentium II MMX 400 Mhz RAM Graphic Board ->> Matrox G200 It seems I cannot start SVGA server , or should I try accelerated ??? thanks in advance to anyone, who can help me. Yes, that should work without trouble, as long as you don't exceed the maximum values.
I was unable to choose from the list of card, because I didn't foung the G200 in it, so I had to skip this step.
OK. This might be the problem. You could try to configure your card as a Matrox Millennium, this should work, too.
For the autopolling of the clock it works when I choose VGA server, it doesn't when I choose SVGA.
It should not be necessary to probe the clocks for Matrox cards. They have a programmable clock generator.

No, there's no need to spend money for a commercial server. The SVGA-Server from XFree 3.3.3 supports the G200 card.
thanks in advance to anyone, who can help me. This wonderful piece of equipment ( my new pc :) is only operating under that nasty other buggy windowing system.... you know :{}
I really need to have a good free and stable system running on it !!
Try to upgrade to XFree 3.3.3. The new setup program knows about about the new G200 cards. <PRE> Greetings to all, For four days, I was posting in order to be able to run a nice X server on my new system. It WORKS, thanks to all of you guys who helped me to sort this one out, specially Lenz. Beiing able to start X give me the possibility to start KDE and then check a lot of docs which was on my system ( look into /usr/doc for those whose like me don't know where to look :) One of the major problem I ran across was that I knew I had to download something, but I didn't had a precise picture of what I was doing . Finally I upgrade with the following packages: xf86-3_3_3-2_i386.rpm xfsetup-3_3_2-2_i386.rpm xsvga-3.3.3-0.i386.rpm and I download but did NOT use this one : xmatrox-2_2-0_i386.rpm My concern here is to help non specialist users, call them the WEPP's ( Word Excel PowerPoint ) to join the world of free software. To achieve this Linux should be easier to install. It is already not that complicated to do but it is not simple either. It requires the computer culture. For example in my case, what was the minimum set of rpm I had to update and why.
From what I donwload I will say : - the general stuff >> XF86 - the setup engine >> XF86setup - the new server >> xsvga
but I 'm only guessing , is that right BTW ???? Anyway it's great to have Windows and colors without Window$ !!!:) Hummm.... I'm afraid I have other questions.... I cannot have the sound working. I guess I read what I found in the SUSE docs ( I have a 5.3 boxed set ) I rebuild the kernel and in sound I checked the option which looks the most appropriate ( I have a SB16 creative sound blaster ISA board) I trieed as module, and in the kernel, so i did: make clean make xconfig make dep zImage I edit the lilo.conf make modules make modules_install I copy the image and sytem.map I restart the system It seems that I m still missing something ??? If anyone can help, I 'll be glad Thanks in advance regards to all and for those who speaks french ... try doing "lsmod" and see if the sound module is being loaded. If it isn't, type "modprobe <name of snd module>" to load the module. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Did you run "lilo" after installing the new kernel image? This is essential. Alternatively you could run "make zlilo", this will install the new kernel an run lilo automatically. "cat /dev/sndstat" should reveal the status of your sound configuration.
