Kvm Vs. Mouse, Irratic behavior...
Hello, When using a KVM switch with my SUSe box and an XP box, when I switch to the Linux box and move the mouse at all, the mouse arrow goes crazy running all across the screen and clicking on evetything it touches. I've tried the CTRL+ALT+F1/CTRL+ALT+F7 trick but this did not work. The ONLY thing I can do is reboot the Linux box. If I stay on the Linux box, I'm fine. BUt if I KVM to the XP box and back, the mouse goes crazy. I've seen this posted about ver. 9.0 too, but didn't see a resolution that worked. Any help is appreciated!! Thanks, Carl M. I'm afraid it's not an OS related problem. I have the same trouble with Windows. Though my KVM switch will recover after a minute or so. I still need to move the mouse a bit. Sandy -- List replies only please! Please address PMs to: news-reply2 (@) japantest (.) homelinux (.) com
I appreciate the response but what you describe is a different issue. Every
system, inherent to the KVM, has a "pause"
causing you to have to move the mouse. My problem however is that no matter
how long you wait, the mouse goes nuts when you move it. Go to the XP
machine and the mouse is 100% fine. This is something to do with the KVM and
mouse versus Linux...

Okay, here's the long version: Though my KVM switch will recover after a minute or so. I still need to move the mouse a bit, until the crazy jumping stops. I think it's something like a wrong synchronisation where the stored signals are interpreted wrong after changing to another box on the KVM. If your KVM does not have an electronic regulation to keep the connection after you switch to another box the situation is even worse in my experience. Sandy -- List replies only please! Sandy,
I understand, but with the Linux box, I could move the mouse for an hour
and the issue would not change. The mouse simply will not behave properly,
period. I'm going to try a different KVM switch too <different brand> and a
different mouse as well, which should rule out the hardware. If there is
anything I can change in Linux though, I hope someone lets me know soon. I
can't use the Linux box at all and it's killing me. :-)
Thanks again!!
Carl

I and many others have experienced the same thing with Linux, but not Windows or OS/2. Also, it appears to be a problem, only when the wheel mouse is enabled. My solution is to have one mouse for my main linux box and another for everything else via KVM.

This is almost always down to the quality of the switching and buffering (if any) in the KVM. I've found that the following *can* help: switch to a text terminal before switching to the XP machine, and then back to the desktop when you return run the mouse control centre module and make a change, then reverse the change before OKing the dialog use the power option on the KVM if it has one use a "plain" ps/2 mouse, rather than one with a usb to ps/2 convertor plug. No go. I'll try the power option

In my experience, it is a combination of motherboard, KVM, mouse and OS... I have a cheap Belkin KVM and with one of my machines I get what you describe, pressing Esc often cleans it up, but it acts like that whether I am in Windows or Linux on that box. On another box, it jumped about with 2.4 Kernel, but 2.6 was fine. On the one with the 2.6 Kernel, I tried switching to a Logitech MX1000 laser mouse, but the mouse stopped working altogether, switching it out for a cabled mouse sorted the problem. In general, don't use a wireless mouse with a KVM, a lot of machines just don't like it - especially if the receiver is passively powered (pulling power from the host PC) and the KVM is also passive (same goes for keyboards as well, and if one of the machines needs a PS/2 to DIN 5 converter I've usually found that they just don't work at all). Use a decent quality KVM, some of the cheap computer supermarket ones don't isolate very well when switching and can cause these problems. And some OS/Motherboard combinations get touch when the switch doesn't switch cleanly. Use a good quality motherboard - none of my Asus boards have any problems (apart from the wireless issue above), while a cheap MSI OEM board always causes grief no matter what OS is installed. Dave
