[SuSE Linux] Boot up problem
Hi, After rebuilding the kernel I updated lilo.conf as follows: boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b prompt timeout=100 image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux initrd=/boot/initrd root=/dev/hda1 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz.old label=old root=/dev/hda1 read-only Unfortunately after saving the file I've forgot to run lilo as docs suggest with the result that now my machine won't boot up. This 's the error during boot : #Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01 I 've then created a rescue floppy and a boot floppy from the installation CD but both of them don't work? When I start the machine the floppy drive is read but few seconds later LILO: comes up and I am left only with the boot linux option. Any Idea how to get to my system back ? -- Luca Colombi System Administrator The Hub Communications Co. Ltd. Boot using the installation floppy. Load modules when needed. Then go into "start installation/system" and choose "boot installed system". Enter your root partition and all should be fine. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
This question is from a linux-newbie. I have just bought S.u.S.E. linux 5.3 and is about to install it on my computer (pent II 400, 100 MB RAM, 4 GB HD) I want to run x-windows, and I read that my graphics card is not supported in xfree86 v 3.3.2, and hence not in suse linux 5.3 either. is there a way to easily enable support for my graphic card, preferably without having to download the entire xfree86 v 3.3.3 (which supports my card), or wait for suse linux 6.0 which also has this support. Where do I find these files, and which ones are needed/not needed. I'll also be very gratefull for a few tips on how to install them - keep in mind I have never installed linux before.
Hi, It's a great pleasure to answer this one as everybody help me out on this one. You need: xf86-3_3_3-2_i386.rpm xfsetup-3_3_2-2_i386.rpm xsvga-3.3.3-0.i386.rpm you can download them from : <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/XFree86-3.3.3-SuSE</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/XFree86-3.3.3-SuSE</A> then you do rpm -U for each of them like that: rpm -U xf86-3_3_3-2_i386.rpm rpm -U xfsetup-3_3_2-2_i386.rpm rpm -U xsvga-3.3.3-0.i386.rpm then reconfig X trough XFSetup. It should work fine It did for me on almost the same system (less RAM more HD). Best regards GH Portefait Fredrik Rodland wrote:

Welcome aboard!

Download the following to files from <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/XFree86-3.3.3-SuSE</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/XFree86-3.3.3-SuSE</A> o xsvga.rpm o xfsetup.rpm Upgrade these packages with YaST (see manual for details on how to do this) or with RPM (rpm -Uh <package>). Now you can configure your X-Server using xf86config or XF86Setup. Dear Luca, did you include a driver for the hard disc as well during the configuration procedure? I've got the same message when I did not include a driver for my scsi controler in the kernel. So I put the boot disc from an older kernel in the floppy and rebooted using that old kernel. When LILO: appears simply press <ENTER>. After Linux came up, configure your new kernel once more.
