I wonder... could a machine created with the server be run with the player? Provided that the player is free (of charge), I don't remember.
Yes, that's possible. The Player is free to use. IIRC, one even can create VMs with the Player since a few versions. Since I licensed Workstation (for its advanced Team and Record/Replay features), I haven't used Player much.
And very slow... i have to wait minutes for actions!
I haven't used Server 2 with the 11.2 patches, only with 11.1. There it was not slower, just more inconvenient cf. console usage.
No, the console seems to be more or less similar in speed. What is very slow is the configuration interface.
Ah yes, that might have been. I didn't use the configuration very much, and was only annoyed (like you) that the Javascript AJAX start code is obviously not well tested on Firefox 3.5. (That it doesn't show in a browser window at first, is due to Javascript errors that one can see on the server console.) I think Server 2 is a big regression compared to Server 1, but then, I use Linux on the workstation. Many of my clients use Windows workstations anyhow, and for them it's not as bad, as they can use Virtual Infrastructure. We'll see how it goes.
I wonder if server version 1 will be adapted to this new kernel, that would be the best solution (for me, that is).
I doubt that. Already usage on 11.1 kernels was only possible with community-written patches. And then it didn't sync time correctly, at least not on Core2Duo systems. I have dumped internal VMware Server usage in the mean time and keep it only on one system to be able to track problems that our customers have.
