[opensuse] How to never check for updates?
Hello, I'm new to the list and have just installed Leap 42.3 64bit with GNOME 3.20.2 on a Lenovo laptop. The laptop is intended for use in remote areas with low internet bandwidth. In order to reduce internet traffic as much as possible, I would like to prevent the system from checking for updates altogether when it's online in low-bandwidth areas. However, - I can't find the option to never check for updates in YaST2 > Online Update Configuration. - GNOME Software Updater configuration as described in Start-Up Guide, par. 9.4.3 Configuring the GNOME Software Updater... https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/startup/single-html/book.opensus... ...is not available on my system ("Software Settings" in the Settings app > All Settings isn't present.) What would be your preferred strategy to accomplish "never check for updates"? Hope you can help. Many thanks in advance. uninstall package kit. Taboo and uninstall these at least: PackageKit-browser-plugin PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin PackageKit-gtk3-module apper gnome-packagekit pk-update-icon Yast Online Updater is a manual command, it doesn't run unless you call it. However, you could just disable online repositories, and then even if you accidentally run it or zypper, they will not connect. You can then use and external hard disk for installing updates that you store there on some other place. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" (Minas Tirith))

Is that really necessary, just as a result of using gnome? I use the qt version of YaST and the answer to the OP's question there is simply to not check the tick box that enables Automatic Online Update. I'm very surprised that gnome doesn't offer some similar control, but I don't use it so I don't know. YaST only downloads the repositories when I explicitly open the Online Update screen, and never downloads or installs any updates unless I explicitly ask it to.

What package should I install to be able to configure the GNOME Software Updater as described here in 10.4.3: https://www.suse.com/documentation/sled-12/book_sle_deployment/data/sec_upda... And here in 9.4.3 Configuring the GNOME Software Updater: https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/startup/single-html/book.opensus... Currently, configuration is not possible since the option Applications > System Tools > Settings > *Software Settings* is not present on my system. Gnome checks for updates and downloads them in advance, even if you decide to not install them, when it asks you later. At least it did the last time I checked. If you want to impede network activity by the updater, the only sure move is uninstall it. You still have YaST, to be used manually.

Sorry, I can't check, I'm using XFCE this instant, and I remove package kit on all my systems as a matter of routine. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

That isn't what the documentation Fritz posted a link to says. It says you can stop it checking. But Fritz, I don't understand why you want to install yet another means of automatic updating when what you want to do is disable automatic updating? As Carlos says, you already have YaST. Why not use that? Open YaST, go to the Online Update Configuration window and hopefully it will be obvious how to turn off automatic checks.
You still have YaST, to be used manually.

Right, 42.3 was a release with gnome-packagekit gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.updates active false after gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.updates active to make sure it's disabled. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Thanks Bjørn, for below instructions. It worked, the system doesn't check for updates anymore :-) Regards, Fritz On 2018-05-06 22:59, Bjørn Lie wrote:
