RE: [SLE] DVD burning
DVD burning is a crime on linux... First of all there is the *BIG* difference in DVD+R(W) and DVD-R(W). Although it seems that the '+' variant becomes the standard, there are many DVD-R(w) drives available. Secondly, the author of cdrecord has decided that he wants to make money on DVD burning. Therefore, it is not possible to write a completely used DVD with cdrecord. In the mean while there is a spin-off of cdrecord called dvdrecord, but it is a 0.1 version. Development goes very slowly, and it has a numerous amount of bugs. I tried to get it work with the latest DVD+RW drive from Philips, but no succes. This is a linux issue, on winblows it works fine. Finally I bought a Pioneer DVD-RW drive and got it working with dvdrecord. So, yes you can get it to work. But no, don't expect a well supported set of tools for it... Regards Harry

I don't agree that burning DVD is pain in the a**. I have a HP DVD+RW 200i and I use dvd+rw tools to burn images prepared with k3b (mkisofs) and it works absolutely fabulous . -- ------------------------------------------------------------- Aleksandar Topuzovic System & network administrator

They should probably work, as far as I can see the dvd+rw tools just do dd if=image.iso of=/dev/scd0 and before that some controls to the device (setting parameters and so.) -- ------------------------------------------------------------- Aleksandar Topuzovic System & network administrator

My Ricoh DVD+R/RW (MP5125A) works absolutely fine with the dvdrecord tools, even if the procedure is somewhat arcane. I get a full 4.7G on the +RW media and updating/rewriting is no problem. GUI tools, on the other hand are SFAIK non-existant. Dylan -- "Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars" Billy Bragg

dvd+rw tools and dvdrecord work fine with a Sony DRU500A. No problems to write DVD+R(W) and DVD-R(W). Ralf -- Ralf Haueisen ralf.haueisen@pi.uka.de df1iaz@darc.de http://www.qsl.net/df1iaz
