I've encountered an odd bug, annoying but not critical, in the conversion from KDE 3.4.2 to KDE 3.5. If I use the KDE Control Center directly and go to Appearance and Themes / Background, I get the correct screen to set the desktop background. But if I use the taskbar icon for KCC (an applet, technically), which provides more direct access to Appearance and Themes, I just get a blank window when I then go to Background. Would anyone else care to take a minute and try this? Is it just me or is there a more general problem here? Paul

I don't have a taskbar applet for Kcc... maybe if you removed that applet and re-added it?? -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

Tried that -- it made no difference, although the applet itself seemed to be slightly different from the one for 3.4.2. Paul

I went to the contro center menu and selected edit item, then checked the box for adding the tray item. It updated, saved the config, exited, yet I still have no tray applet... -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

Aha -- you edited the menu that you get when you click on the K button at the left end of the bar at the bottom of your screen. What you want to do is right-click on an empty spot on that bar. You should see a list of 4 items, the bottom one being Panel Menu. Click on that and you'll have an opportunity to add an applet to the Panel Menu. Control Center is one of those applets. Paul

So what happens when you do Appearances and Themes / Background? Do you get a blank window, as I did on this machine? (On another machine, I get the correct window contents.) Paul

using the tray icon menus, YES, I get a blank ( grey not black) window. and now when I try to use the green-start button control panel, the little hourglass spins, and....goes away. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

So I'm not the only one to get that blank window! Interesting that I don't get it on my other machine. Also, I don't get the blank window if I go directly to Control Center instead of using the taskbar mini-app. Anyone else see this (in KDE 3.5)? Or have a suggestion as to what to do about it? My guess is that the code for the mini-app rather than the code for the Control Center itself is at fault. I've tried reinstalling kdebase, which supposedly includes that code, and it makes no difference. Paul

Paul. I get the same results no matter where I start control center. Everything works as it should from my 3.5. Almost sounds as if something didn't get installed or configured right after installation. Did you restart KDE after do the update? You need to drop down to init 3 and then back to init 5. If you didn't, that may be the reason for your problems. just a thought, Lee

Well, it works on my other machine but not this one. I did a full reboot and it didn't help. I agree that something might not be configured correctly, but damned if I know what it is or how to track it down. My installation was somewhat messy, though, because it took me a while to find the correct repository. On the other machine I knew how to do it and so it was straightforward. Paul
