[SLE] gnucash, qt_error from libguile
Has anyone successfully installed gnucash? I've seen the recommendations for using moneydance instead of gnucash posted on this newsgroup, but moneydance is shareware, and I want to stick with free software. I'm running into library problems. When I tried to install the latest stable gnucash rpm, it asked for newer libjpeg and libreadline libraries. libjpeg was a pain to install, but with help from some earlier messages on this newsgroup I got it running. I got libreadline by installing the virtuoso package for linux. That was enough to let the gnucash rpm install without errors, but when I try to run gnucash, it gives the following error: gnucash: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libguile.so.4: undefined symbol: qt_error I've tried updating my libguile library to a newer one, but I got the same problem. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm stuck. I'm running SuSE 6.2. Thanks for agreeing to help. I attempted to install gnucash from an rpm (gnucash-1_2_5-1_i386.rpm). The rpm requested that I install libjpeg and libreadline, which I did. The program then installed without errors. Executing the program produced the error I mentioned earlier, gnucash: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libguile.so.4: undefined symbol: qt_error When I checked out /usr/doc/gnucash, I found a file called README.SuSE that says To get GnuCash compiled you will need gnucash-1.1.25.tar.gz ("NOT REALLY??") eperl-2.2.14.tar.gz Xbaelin-4.6.2.4.tar.gz guile-core-19980818.tar.gz XmHTML-1.1.5-1-rh51.i386.rpm The file claims that all these are available from ftp.gnucash.org, but I am unable to log in there. I managed to find all these packages in other places on the web, except for guile-core-19980818.tar.gz. If you have this package, please send it to me, I suspect this might be what I need to eliminate the error message. Thanks again, --Fraser Hanson On Wed, 1 Mar 2000, NeoFax wrote:

Use of the GTK was a design decision. Motif is a proprietary toolkit and you have to buy it to use. GTK is free software, I don't think there is anything to fix in there.

I agree with NeoFax, never use an RPM not built for your distribution unless you know how to tweak with the failed dependencies, and even then. I got GnuCash 1.3.0 and built it from source. There are a few packages like nana, eperl, etc. that need to be installed. Look in the file README.SuSE-6.3 for the packages to install and the output of: # configure --prefix=/usr/local for failed dependencies and see if they are available from the suse CDs. Don't install "slib", mentioned in the README, just yet. After building and installing, the first time you run it a message will appear about the "slib" library missing. In the message it says where to get slib and a command you have to run after installing it. Install slib, run the command and GNUcash should be working. The only problem I had was when I tried to use my Quicken files. The dates were all wrong. It turned out to be that in the file the date format was mm/dd/yyyy. GNUcash seems to understand only dd/mm/yy. I edited the Quicken file and imported the files OK. Good luck. -- Rafael Herrera -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hello all, My only comment is that if people are now able to get GNUcash to work..not install, but actually come up and work. Could someone make RPM's of the needed software and post them somewhere like SuSE or some other site. I have never been able to get this program to work. It's the only piece of software under Linux I have had trouble with. Thank you in advance, "Rafael E. Herrera" wrote:

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 What I meant by fix, was not to change it to use Motif, but to fix GnuCash, so that it will work on SuSE. GnuCash is designed to look for certain Scheme files in a hardcoded directory. This directory is in a different place on SuSE than it is on RedHat. That's what I meant. Sorry for the confusion.
