This is the fstab I had with Suse 7.3 8.2 wants to ignore hda1 and designate hda5 as C and that as Win32. Also it set the extended partition as active and not multiboot. Apart from telling it at install not to mount the other partitions and then manually editing fstab what can I do to force the issue? Do I have to move the /boot back in the order of partitions? Under 7.3 multibooting with legacy the discontinuity is not an issue for either 7.3 or dos. /dev/hda4 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda10 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/hda12 /data1 auto noauto, user 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto, user, sync 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults, noauto 0 0 /dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat noauto, user 0 2 /dev/hda5 /windows/D vfat noauto, user 0 2 /dev/hda6 /windows/E vfat noauto, user 0 2 /dev/hda7 /windows/F vfat noauto, user 0 2 /dev/hda8 /windows/G vfat noauto, user 0 2 /dev/hda9 /windows/H vfat noauto, user 0 2 /dev/sda4 /media/zip auto noauto, user 0 0 /dev/hda11 swap swap pri=42 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /media/FlashDrive vfat noauto, user 0 0 CWSIV ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Unless you need the changes during the update phase... Edit the fstab file manually to your liking. As to which partition is active (meaning bootable flag), that is changed by grub, you'll have to configure it there. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
On another box it seems grub makes no partition active.
How do I make grub correct this error while in linux so that I can
multiboot?
Can someone send me a copy of their grub multiboot menu?
BTW where is this stored?
In creating this havic I find that 8.2 made the extended partition
invisable except to *nix when mounted on the other machine. The fix
required reinstallation after rebuilding the partitions.
At this point I will try to use partition magic to use the rest of the
disk as extended and create the *nix partitions in that remaining space.

You can do it from Yast, but the configuration file is: /boot/grub/menu.lst Entries having a "makeactive" are set active when booting from them - if grub manages the booting, of course. For example: title Windows Me root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 This boots windows on '/dev/hda1' making the partition active first. If you remove all those lines, grub will not touch the active status - I think O:-)

I'll send you mine offlist.

I wonder... hiding partitions is a trick used by partition magic, in order to boot several windows copies, I think. It can be changed using fdisk, I believe. But you can search the grub docs, it could be there as well.

If you change partition numbers linux will not start, and grub file has to be edited. Also fstab changes. Be sure you know how to use the rescue CD :-) -- it's doable, I instructed a friend on the phone and it was the first time for both of use - and he is the windows type ;-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
