[opensuse] Restore KDE4 Desktop
Ok, this is VERY fustrating. My 11.1 system with KDE4 crashed and ever since then the desktop has been in disarray. The "panel" with the desktop icons went away and I can not figure out how to add it back. I played with the widget things and all the context menu items... none of them gets it back. Also, the taskbar re-arranged itself (the clock is all the way to the left, etc) and I do not see a way to move the items. It is "unlocked" but if I drag them they do not move, and if I right click there is no "Move" option. In KDE 3.5 you can right click a taskbar item and there is a "Move" option... not so in KDE 4. Can anyone help before I go back to KDE 3.5 for good? P.S. (rant): How the hell does KDE 4 get past alpha stage without these **BASIC** options? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You have to click Configure Desktop or something like that. Very unintuitive. Please file a bug and cc us with the bug number.

I am also sticking with KDE 3.5.10 in the meantime.

I hasn't. KDE 4.0 was just a stable API release, and KDE 4.1 was meant for 'early adopters'. Only KDE 4.2 will be meant for the end user. And while KDE 4.2 really is a decent desktop, this particular issue stays the same. Please file the bug at bugs.kde.org and paste the URL here. Right click on the panel and click on Panel Settings. A little 4-way move arrow will appear when you put it over the widget and you should be able to move it -- Michael S. In theory, you should do this to add what used to be called kicker... - unlock widgets - right click on the desktop and click add panel To add widget to the bottom bar - unlock widgets - right click on the panel (bottom bar) and click add widgets To add the desktop widget back - unlock widgets - right click on the desktop and click add widgets - click Folder View and then Add Widget - Configure the widget from the widget itself.. the default view is not the Desktop, but you can set this in the Folder View options. If you want to have the "old" desktop back (ie no floating Desktop folder widget - right click on the desktop and select Desktop Settings. - in Desktop Activity, set the Type to Folder view

To move icons - unlock widgets - right click on the panel (bar) and select panel settings - mouse over each item and you will see a 4 point arrow thing appear - click and drag the 4 point arrow to move the item to your preferred location

They are all there. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The desktop folder plasmoid will do that. Another thing you should look into is the desktop configuration dialog. You will get by right clicking on the desktop.

On the right side of the panel is the cashew. If you click on it, you will into the panel configuration mode. BTW: This is not KDE 4.1.3, but backported by the openSUSE KDE team from KDE 4.2.

Because these options are there, but only in different places. These changes have nothing to do with openSUSE, but are pure KDE matter. IMO there are vaild reasons for this, but many people think different. TO everybody: Please, please do not start another disscussion about this. Stay with helping to work with the current state of things. Herbert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is a surprisingly common occurrence. If you EVER leave your desktop with icons unlocked it will happen seemingly at random. Using the desktop folder option will almost certainly cause it to happen. If you want to get back to some basic state just logout, then use a terminal session (ctrl-alt-f2) and login in text mode and delete the file named /home/<user>/.kde/share/config/plasmarc It will be recreated in the default state. Then reconfigure your desktop as you like it (all over again). Having done this a few times you will learn to make a backup copy of that plasmarc file any time you make a significant change to the desktop. The plasmarc file gets hozed far too often for a production system. And an accidental delete of the Launcher Icon can not be restored by the regular means because you can never seem to get it just the way it was. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

John, please file a detailed bug at bugs.kde.org and explain what you know. I had experienced the crash and then the disarray of the all desktop (I forced my self to use KDE4 since openSUSE 11.1, but what I'm really waiting is KDE 4.2, but for now I'm trying to use 4.1.3, after years with KDE 3.x ). But you can still move the "applets", after unblock go to the last left icon of the panel, a configuration panel should appear, if you put the mouse pointer over an applet you will be able to move it. rgds. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
