Remote Desktop Question
Thanks all for the intriguing Remote Desktop discussion. I hadn't been able to get it working at all previously and now have limited capibility. Thanks to your help out there (I forget who) I can now use VNC to linkt to my SuSE laptop from my XP desktop. I cannot use RDC to connect to my laptop, however. (I can use both VNC:// and RDC:// to connect from my laptop out.) When I start a VNC session from XP, instead of getting my current desktop, it provides me the SuSE KDE login screen. I can login and do stuff, but there are a few wierd things. First, the window says, "nobody's x11 desktop (yoda)" (My machine is called "yoda". Who's "nobody"? Second, the sounds all happen at the laptop (remote) machine and not on my local machine. When I logged in the KdE startup sound played on my laptop. It was a bit bizarre, because the screen saver was running at the time. Will this mess up my settings if I do something wierd while remotely connected then do something from the console? Thanks! -- kai ponte www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is a M$ specific protocol. You can only use it to see remote windows. There is no RDP server for linux, so you cannot use RDP to see a linux desktop.

There are different ways to setup vnc on linux, the way you have seet it up gives you a new session instead of "sharing" the current desktop. Look at preveous posts in this thread to setup "KDE Desktop Sharing" to get the "Current Desktop".
First, the window says, "nobody's x11 desktop (yoda)" (My machine is called "yoda". Who's "nobody"?
This is a bit complicated to explain, let me just say that the window title is created before you get the login screen, at that time there was "nobody" logged into the system, so that is the "username" placed in the title. Actually the "login Screen" is run under the special linux user "nobody", ( This is kind of like to the Windows user "Guest").
Second, the sounds all happen at the laptop (remote) machine and not on my local machine. When I logged in the KdE startup sound played on my laptop. It was a bit bizarre, because the screen saver was running at the time.
Since linux is a multiuser system, there may be many desktops running at the same time. (try opening a second vnc to your linux and you'll see what I mean). All these desktops share some of the computer's resources (like your sound card). So if you are into psycodelic music, try playing music on 2 desktops at the same time! VNC does not provide a way to play the sound locally, (nor to use the local printer definitions for that matter). RDP does allow the sound to be played locally (although I've only gotten it to work via the command line.)

"Doing something weird" is very broad term 8-)! But you should not have any problems as long as you do not sign on 2 as the same user (KDE used to have problems with that, and I haven't tested the fixes they implemented yet). Even if you do log in twice as the same user, I would not expect you to have problems beyond the fact that the last one to save the configurations overwrites any preveous versions, much like editing a file twice: the last "edit" to save a file, overwrites any preveous changes...

Well, I only have two users on the system - kai and root. I logged in as "kai". I did try to "shut down" from the VNC connection but nothing happened on the laptop. -- kai www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

Should have worked, I do that all the time... The problem probably had nothing to do with being remote.... Jerry
