RE: [SLE] nvidia gforce mx & linux - no go. someone at suse inves tigate
Jesse- Did you use the SuSE rpms from the xfree86 site? I had previously installed build 0.94, and I am wondering if I can just use the rpms to upgrade to 0.95...? I had lots of trouble before configuring Xfree86 (especially w/ sax2 ! ) but I guess I could always cut & paste from my old config file.... Ive tried this with 4.01
i download the suse 6.4 version of xfree4.01 and then the nvidia drivers ( which i compiled from source ) gives me errors saying the modules are newer than another file, doesnt explain which. ( when i run XFree86 )
should i try again by downloading the bog standard Xfree86 4.01 from the xfree86 site ?
Are you using the latest drivers from nvidia? I believe it is version 0.9.5. Prior to that they maintained two versions of the GLX drivers, one for xfree86-4.0 and one for xfree86-4.01. The new drivers are only for 4.01. I have a GeForce 256, and it is working great. What type of card do you have?
even if i try and run an ordinary svga server i get a mass of snow on the screen, ( xfree86 ). Im surprised at this.
Could my card be faulty ?
thanks dids

this is a real disappointment as i couldnt wait to see how fast it was going to fly. Someone somewhere desperately needs to sort this out as the mx is a very good and reasonably priced card.
Install XFREE86 4.1 and then install the Linux reference drivers from Nvidia. This has worked successfully for many people. Xfree 3.xx will not work, must use 4.x

No. I originally tried to just upgrade to the newest 0.95 driver and the xfree86-4.0 I had installed quit on me saying that the GLX module expected xfree86-4.01. I installed the new xfree86-4.01, recompiled the kernel module, and it worked. I suspect that a module compiled for xfree86-4.0 would not work for xfree86-4.01.

You should not have to run sax2 again. The nvidia drivers are really easy to compile, and they install the binaries in the right location. Just install xfree86-4.01, make and install the latest nvidia drivers, and away you go.

I actually managed to compile the nvidia drivers, but i had to removed an undefined identifier ( commented out ) to do with the i810 or something similar. compiled fine, but didnt work the line was 1465 in interface.c if your're wondering ( off the top of my head ) i'll get 4.01 from the cvs site next week omeone should make this easier tho, i cant even get a basic x-setup working in 640 x 480 and i wouldnt call myself a total newbie. dids -----Original Message----- From: Jesse Marlin [mailto:jlm@compgen.com] Sent: 14 September 2000 19:45 To: Cleary, Mike Cc: 'Jesse.Marlin@compgen.com'; 'suse-linux-e@suse.com' Subject: RE: [SLE] nvidia gforce mx & linux - no go. someone at suse investigate Cleary, Mike writes:
