Periodically I see a request for "WORKGROUP" coming from this 95 box as signaled in /var/log/messages by named. Which is followed by a request to the forwarders of my ISP as shown by diald-top. This is not produced because of a request for available SMB / CIFS servers by opening network neighborhood. It is out of the question to deny this box to query named. I think I am going to read up on named and see if I can get a more verbose logging to see exactly why it is forwarding this request. And hello again, Well this problem is solved / has disappeared. I had a tcp/ip problem in Win95 that only was solved by reinstalling the net on it and remove and install winsock2 then is started to query my DNS for "WORKGROUP.DOMAIN.COM". I made my router have a CNAME for this and everything is fine. I stopped using netscape on my WIn95 box because it always tries to reach home.netscape.com whether you start the browser or the mailer! So switched to Explorer and Outlook Express 5 from the third(!) millennium update CD. Now I suspect it's Outlook that accesses servers from mailexchange.com on port 80 (yes www:-) once in a while (say 20 min's) AAarrrghhh, time for that filter I promised myself I *hate* programs that start doing things without a mentioning somewhere and/or a possibility of disabling it without an rm -r * ! The funny thing is that from linux using netscape I do not get to see www.mailexchange.com home page, just a blank screen with the name of the site.??? So 2 gone and 1 came. Thanks for listening BB, Arjen P.S. Rayethon doesn't that have a connection to Racal-Milgo? I have a 1200bps hand operated dinosaur of them somewhere. -- Sell what you use, use what you sell. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Not entirely sure that this is the exact same problem, but I use Freesco 0.2.3a currently form my gateway/router, and it was having problems w/ periodic dns queries from a Win98 box, plus queries everytime I tried pinging any other host on the network. I had tried making sure that every host on the local net was listed in the named.hst and named10.rev files for named (dns) on the freesco, but the problem persisted. Turns out that Win98 has a known bug (go figure) where w/ Win95 or Winnt (or Win98 upgraded from 95, if you work it right) will use a c:\windows\system\hosts and lmhosts file, similar to /etc/hosts on *nix boxes, and not even bother looking up local network hosts, or any host that is listed there ( this does involve setting some registry keys). But guess what. Win 98 is broken in this aspect, and although there is supposed to be a patch out there, I have been dodged and blown off by M$ support. The easy fix was to go to the Network Neighbourhood=>Properties=>Add=>Protocol=>M$=>NetBEUI, then NetBEUI=>Properties=>Advanced=>Check the box for 'default network protocol' This sets it so the Win98 box uses NetBEUI for its network silliness, and only uses TCP/IP when you try to connect to the Internet at large. Seems to work so far.
