Re: [opensuse] Blackberry 7100 Series & (openSuSE) Linux 10.2
So in fact there are two questions:
1) Is there a way to use a Blackberry 7100 on openSuSE 10.2? It doesn't have to be a stock solution complete with RPMs, we can build the software if necessary (and if it's open source). Ideally integration with the KDE PIM software (KOrganizer, KAddressBook, etc.) is what he's looking for, especially since he's adopted KMail, but something stand-alone might be acceptable.
Don't quote me on this but I believe you need a piece of RIM software to get it working. It is indeed possible to do, but I am pretty sure you need a third party RIM software to get it to sync properly with Linux. Once you do that, I recommend using Evolution. The KOrganizer and KAddressBook are fine but I personally prefer Evolution. If you like that others, that's cool, I think they'll work all the same in the end. But anyway, I am pretty sure you need the RIM software. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So... You're saying I need some software from RIM? Do you know what, precisely? What's it called? Is is free (of charge)? Open Source? Is it officially distributed by RIM? Is it supported? I'll go do some more hunting, but if you can tell me a little more about this "RIM software," I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Randall, Is this phone blue tooth? If so it should work so far as backups etc to get the data from phone to computer and back again.. Did you try Kandy, of Kitchen sync? Kandy seems to have some sort of scheme to put things into phone books etc. Documents can actually just be put into any sort of folder/file you would want to. I have had no luck using anything except blue tooth, not even after buying the Motorolla razr( it's what I have here, but expect to get a balckeberry this go round.) But we bought the usb cord they sold for the razr and it just never would sync w/ the box... Other than that if you get any more info, please post it.. I'm sure I'm not the only one interested. ;) j -- j -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So far, all we've tried was to access the device from Windows running in VMware, which led us to the whole issue about VMware USB access not working at all under openSuSE 10.2. KitchenSync came up in our research, but not Kandy. I don't think he's tried either of them, yet. He's not at his desk right now, so I haven't yet got an answer about whether his Blackberry (a 7100t, if I recall correctly) has Bluetooth or not. Thanks for the information. I'll look into KitchenSync and Kandy a bit more. We also discovered there's a Linux user's "Corner" on BlackberryForums.com (<http://www.blackberryforums.com/linux-users-corner/>). I think there was a how-to already posted on the list to solve that issue.

What you need is the Blackberry Desktop Manager. Don't know if a Linux version exists, but I do know that a Mac version is available. We have a Blackberry Enterprise Server sitting in your server room, and I can scrounge up a spare Blackberry. If I have a bit of time on monday I'll try to connect to Opensuse 10.2. Windows is s no-brainer, provided you have a working usb connection. -- Sandy List replies only please! The only solution under 10.2 is to recompile the kernel. There's no need to rehash that whole rigamarole.

Well, Windows running in a VMware virtual machine under openSuSE 10.2 is totally cut of from USB, so rather than a "no-brainer," it's more like "no-go." And I don't think the Desktop Manager exists for Linux, but if you find something out, my friend and I would love to hear about it.
