Why dont you talk to the police? Surely they must know how to proceed. He clearly states that he has taken controll of the victims accounts, isnt that a indication he is "breaking and entering"? If it's the 'other one' then now might be a good time to diswcuss the virtues of our more secure one :-) If they are already using Linux then maybe they need the security tightening...just in case. call the local FBI they are supposed to be interested in stopping cyber crime, and IIRC there is a pretty good inet hacker tracker group in SLED .. which you might have access to.
You might also make certain the girls' computers aren't "leaking" info whenever they are online. Tighten controls , firewall etc , maybe put security to paranoid for a while.. and as someone said, if you can move them to our loving OS... there certainly are versions that will not even confuse them more than a couple of minutes before they are happily IRC-ing and whatever else ( IM, AOL, etc ) then you can really tighten down on whatever is leaking info. Psyco isn't psychic he's getting info off the computers, or he has broken into an ISP, or series of ISPs and is haveing way to much fun to be tolerated anyway. Even if it turns out to be a kid. BTW, don't underestimate the power of the Media. They LOVE this kind of story... As a last resort, it might be worth dealing w/ them.

/snip/ Maybe I'm missing something, but as I understand it, the hacker has hacked _Yahoo_ to get the girs' account information, so what difference would it make what OS they're using? And apparently according to the hacker himself, quoted here in one of the first messages, he has used a password cracker. If this is the case, what the girls really need is really difficult passwords, and only if their OS won't support really difficult passwords, would it help to change OS's. --doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message. If you publish the name of some innocent body by mistake, because the "hacker" is posing as somebody else, or camouflaging his tracks, you might be in deep trouble. Even if you publish data about the right person, without hard proof you may be in trouble. This issue must really be handled by the authorities. I see I'm late here advising an appeal to law enforcement, but I think this is a dubious suggestion. If this individual is a predator of some sort, ignoring him is a very bad idea. If he is not (and even if this is just some kind of harassment), then presumably evidence only available to the law enforcement officials will bear that out. Unfortunately, the Internet has opened new avenues to certain classes of criminal, and ignoring that fact is foolish. Randall Schulz

I was only half following this until now, but if this is an accurate statement, then you would be best advised to get law enforcement involved.

If you can make the case to the appropriate law enforcement agency (I'm not sure which that would be--are you in Georgia, too? If not, and this is an interstate matter, perhaps you need to approach the FBI), then they can get a subpoena forcing the ISP to release the person's name, something you cannot do (I hope). Then they can deal with him directly.

Hmmm... I'm confused. I mentioned law enforcement, and by the FBI I meant the U.S. Government's Federal Bureau of Investigation, who deal, among other things, in interstate criminal activity. On the other hand, I cannot answer the question about which Georgia was being referred to, since I'm not the person with the issue. Obviously, I assumed the U.S. state, not the European country. Lastly, what about what I said reminds you of an "Easter European country..." And what do you mean by that?

Kevan, no offense, but how may times you had to deal with EE country law enforcement? And, for that, with US ones? I got my car hit on a parking in front of a bar here in MN. The guys with the other car came out of the bar and left the parking. When I called police, I was basically told that if no one is hurt, I'd better go with my insurance company, because they have more important thinks to do. They even were not willing to issue me some kind of document, so my insurance company knows that it was not my fault. So I end up paying 1000$. I did not file a claim with the insurance, because they told me that if it is my fault, they are going to rise my insurance. So, please, do not be prejudice. Cheers -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

Whoah!!! Please enlighten me. How am I being prejudiced? As for dealing with law enforcement (I assume you mean Europe from EE country?) Many, many times as a matter of fact. No, I do not get into trouble with the law but I do have a lot of dealings with them. I have recently had to write a report detailing the shortcomings of local policing in my own village. Now, I merely asked the question because everybody immediately thought Georgia USA. Yeah, I've been getting them for 31 years ever since my first one at the age of 11. As for medication.... huh! The only stuff I can get is the painkillers I take all the time (yes, all the time 8 a day every day 365 days of hte year) for the arthritis. I have had stuff like Sanomigraine and many years ago an ergotamine based drug. That last one was interesting...try looking it up on Google and you'll see what I mean. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. One thing to bear in mind, is that most parking lots are private property, where traffic laws do not apply. This means it's up to the parties involved to prove their case, not the police. On the other hand, criminal behaviour, as this might be, is a matter for police.
