I just upgraded from 8.1 to 9.3 and am every time I start a session, I get this message -- "The powersave daemon is not running Starting it will improve performance /usr/sbin/rcpowersaved start" If I run /usr/sbin/rcpowersaved start, it says -- "acpid already running, but should be started by powersaved. Please set acpid service to off or stop it manually ... skipped" I disabled the powersaved daemon because I am running a desktop computer and don't see any need for it, based on my reading. Based on the description for acpid, it doesn't sound like this is something I want to disable (am I wrong?). How can I get powersave out of my hair? Thanks, Greg Wallace

It means that in order to start it manually after the system is running, it needs you to manually stop acpid (with kill, not so easy), and then start rcpowersaved again; this will again start acpid automatically. The easy way is just to enable powersaved. in yast, and it will be available on the next boot. No worry.

The powersaved services are used, for example, to suspend to disk. This is very usefull in portables, but I find it very usefull in desktops, too: I have my system completely booted up and ready in a minute or less, much faster than when booting up completely. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDH4e3tTMYHG2NR9URAtk8AJ97tc2fc2J1abzaDmUJMRFHgfechwCgl8Hz qjjtcO2WAmvp+6AFdJ14gg8= =BAXO -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Well, I got rid of that pop up message I got every time I logged on by uninstalling the kpowersave package. However, my screen save still doesn't start the desktop image just freezes after the time limit for starting the screen saver is reached. I have no idea why this is happening. All of the desktop settings look fine to me. Any help greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

You could just have done "chkconfig acpid off" and done "rcpowersaved start" without having to deinstall anything. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... I'm wondering if the fact that the screen image freezes is what causes the screen saver to not come on. The screen saver stopped working as soon as that freezing up started to happen. Anybody no what controls this (and how to disable it?). The only way I can tell it's frozen is by looking at the clock in the bottom right hand corner. Once it freezes, the colon between the hour and minute stops blinking and it's frozen in time. Whatever hour and minute were on there when it froze stay there until I move the mouse or touch the keyboard. Then the image refreshes. I think maybe if I could shut this function off, the screen saver would kick in(?). Thanks, Greg Wallace

Wrong procedure.

It is not related to the powersaved daemon. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDH4/ktTMYHG2NR9URApObAKCVnRL329Ekor8IwsWBy9c1xj/RQQCeM9ns XSBJc5NRDfbwb7TTu5I749k= =v3gR -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

You are not wrong, that allows poswersaved to run. # chkconfig acpid acpid off # chkconfig powersaved powersaved on Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
