[opensuse] Can't Shut Down
On my son's laptop, I wanted to shut down the system tonight. He's running 11.1 with KDE 3.x on a Dell D800. I go to Geeko > Leave. There's only the option of "Logout" and "Lock". What happened to the other options - Shutdown/Restart/Suspend (disk/ram) and Start Other Operating System? (Those are options on my laptop.) I googled and only found a (fixed) bug in 11.1 KDE 4 beta. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you click "Log out..." is there not an option to do what you desire? I only use the "KDE-style" menu so I can't comment on the SuSE-style, but you click "log out" and then "Turn off computer." It is the same in openSUSE 11.0 and 11.1. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Okay, I checked and I can shut down after logging out. What broke? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No idea Kai, on the desktop with 11.1(i586) and KDE 3, i get the features that you are missing. I'll be updating my laptop as soon as it's back from the shop, and check that out. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Nothing broke. You get only the option to logout if X was started from the command line. For example, if you do 'init 3' or kill X, then run startx from the console, when you go to leave, restart and shutdown won't appear. I think the same thing happens if you run 'init 5' from the console as well. Everything returns to normal when X is started by the system. Hmm. I don't start anything from command line. Now - When I first installed 11.1 on that system, I chose "other" and "KDE3" as the Window manager. However, when it first booted, I ended up in GNOME for some reason. When I log out, I'm dropped into a GNOME-like screen with the options to shutdown or login. Now that I think about it, I remember something about using KDM as my display manager. Where do I set that? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Where do I set that?
On 11.0 I used mc to search files * containing kdm and found 'DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3"' in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. I'll bet 11.1 didn't change that. -- "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg.
