[opensuse] kmid not playing sound
When using kmid to playback a karaoke .mid file I get no sound being sent to my sound card. It's a USB sound card so I plainly see when data is sent to it. This is on a fresh install of 10.3. ----------- Ken, I haven't had much luck with kmid for a while now. I used TiMidity for a while, which is much better, but I'm not sure that is getting much development time now, so I went looking for something else. I settled on "audacious" with the fluidsynth plugin to play midi. It's much easier to setup without having to put the soundfonts in a special place, etc. It works very well. I haven't explored the full use of it yet, just played my midi files. Plus, you have one program to play much of your multimedia files! regards, Lee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lee, I remember you helped, me get sound started way back with 10.0. I would be interested to know more about your work with audacious. I tried it once but never got jack working well enough to know where my problems were. Any references to tutorials or other info would be much appreciated. -ED- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Do you use any other midi devices, and do they work? Do you use timidity? (the only way I have yet learned to play midi sound on linux) -ED- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I have timidity installed. I wanted to use kmid mainly for the karaoke part that it supports. I have looked at and tried others but they either have the same problem or don't support the use of karaoke .mid files. Have you looked to use timididty as a demon? timidity -iA it will run as client for Alsa. Rosegarden works that way. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for adding that, Rajko. I've been using timidity that way so long, I didn't think to specify. Actually, timidity does so much I haven't been able to learn it all yet. -ED- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wrote that because timidity can be used as player and that is what majority of users discover first. I keep startup in file: ~/.profile if [ -x /usr/bin/timidity ]; then timidity -iA fi The 'if' is for other installations that share same home directory, but have not installed timidity. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ken, Just in case you don't have a solution yet, here's what I did with kmid on Suse 10.3 (I just installed 10.3 last week.) Kmid did not play at first, which I've learned to expect. So, I started timidity. Command: timidity -iA -B8,2 -Os Then restarted kmid and went to Settings> MIDI Setup> Select MIDI Device... and tried timidity ports till I found one that works. In my case it was the first timidity port. It plays my .mid files fine, hope this helps you. -ED- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
