Hi. I'm running Sendmail under SuSE 6.4, and I'm having difficulties in getting the configuration right. Yast has two semi-relevant options for Sendmail setup - 'Host with permanent connection' and 'Host with intermittent connection', or something similar. My machine connects to the net via a dialup router and firewall (Freesco), and thus has an intermittent connection, albeit one which is often up for long periods (I have unmetered off-peak net access). When I choose 'Host with intermittent connection', my machine seems to be able to receive mail from local hosts, and queue it correctly for delivery to the ISP's relay. However, for some reason, this configuration leaves Sendmail as an open mail relay. I am reluctant to use this option for obvious reasons. When I use 'Host with permanent connection', the open mail relay is closed, but when my mail program tries to send a mail while I am offline, it hangs either until I connect to the net, or for about a minute. I think that this is just a reverse DNS lookup problem, however, and one that I'm willing to live with. The problem that I want to fix is that my genericstable no longer works under this option. Does anyone have any clues as to why this is? Alternatively, does anyone know why the intermittent connection option leaves my machine open? If it were not for this problem, the intermittent option would be my first choice.
