suggestions wanted school laptop program setup
Hi, all. My kid's school is starting up a laptop program. The laptops will have to connect to the school network for classroom research, Internet access, uploading/downloading files from a server, the normal sort of thing. Of course, we already know that attaching one worm-ridden Windows machine to the network could be disastrous. So, we've already come up with these ideas: 1. Laptops go on a completely separate network from the school's main network - file servers will all run Linux. We've already experimented with putting SuSE 9.0 on a hacked up "Internet appliance" box we had. Works great. 2. Perhaps we should dual-boot the laptops, leaving the Windows XP Home they will come with on so the kids can play games, etc. BUT only allowing the laptops on our network when booted into SuSE. 3. Run some sort of packet-inspecting antivirus on the Linux box that looks at the laptop network? Some sort of proxy software? We don't know if anything like this exists. We would very much appreciate any input on how best to set this up. TIA, Malke -- "And that's how we learned our lesson!" - Bender
