[opensuse] New (p)ata subsystem in kernel 2.6.33?
Hello, I use a Promise PATA controller and openSUSE 11.1. I just upgraded to kernel 2.6.33 from HEAD repo. And my drive hda1 suddenly is now sda1. So I wonder, has the ATA subsystem changed from kernel 2.6.32 to 2.6.33? I can't say for sure exactly, but the ATA subsystem was changed many versions ago. It used to be that PATA was handled by IDE drivers. Then libata was invented, initially to handle SATA, but eventually all ATA. Then default for PATA devices was switched from IDE to libata drivers. It may be that as of 2.6.33 IDE drivers have been entirely discarded, or at least made harder to enable. Under libata, there is no such thing as /dev/hdxX, only /dev/sdxX. Without legacy IDE driver loaded, /dev/hdxX will not exist. -- "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
