Dear all, I have a computer setup with SuSE 8.1 and I have also setup Hylafax. The machine operates as a fax server for a long time now. I was wondering if it is possible to create a dialin service on the same modem as well? Currently Hylafax is using the only modem installed on the system. Can this be done? I have never done something like this so any help would be a big plus!!!! Thank you all! Chris

Hi Chris, you can use the modem for both dial-out (as used now for the fax-server) and dial-in... but of course *not* at the same time! If you want to offer a non-stop fax service and also dial-in possibilities, I'd recommend you to have a second modem connected to your SuSE box for dial-in (using another phone line, that is...). You can by using Mgetty but I don't know how well it works with Hylafax. Also I believe there can be problems detecting the difference between fax and data calls. Mgetty/Vgetty is on the SuSE Distribution. I suggest that you have a look at the documentation that comes with the program. Also there is a mailing list for mgetty. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

The trick is that the modem is capable of differentiating type of calls (voice, data, fax) and have a receiving program capable of passing off to the appropriate app.

I think it is documented on hylafax docus. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

With hylafax it is easy to receive and send faxes on the same modem. However, dialing out with a different program, while hylafax is enabled, is something else. I had to disable it after I misconfigured hylafax (it took the modem for his exclusive use). -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

If you have room in the machine for another modem I would go that way. Easier to configure. Then get yourself one of those cheap fax switches that answers the phone and listens for the fax gaurd tone and sends it to fax if heard, else sends it to the other modem. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
