Just installed Xfree4.0 from the SuSE site, downloaded the GLX and Kernel modules from NVIDIA. WOW!!!!! Just a couple of problems though. Now when I log in (RUN LEVEL-3) as root I no longer have kde I'm in something I've never seen before. What is this for and how can I get kde back? Also if I do any package changes which causes yast to run SuSEconfig, It messes up the install of the NVIDIA GLX driver. Quake3 demo can no longer load libGL.so. Basically every time this happens I have to reinstall the NVIDIA rpms to get quake to run. This doesn't bother me too much as I'm only using quake 3 to test the NVidia 3d stuff. The change to the root login is a killer though. Any one know what I need to do to get KDE back for root? Oh yea is SuSE gonna package the NVIDIA/Xfree4.0 stuff for us any time soon???? When kdm comes up and gives you the opportunity to select the user and log in, it should also give you a dropdown list box for the window manager you want to use. Select KDE from this menu and that will hopefully fix it (assuming this is your problem).

XFree4.0 is already available for download via RPM, but I'm not sure about NVidia drivers. Mark, I had a similar result last night with the root logon. The thing that fixed it was going to my user logon and grabbing the .xsession script. Or at least that's what seemd to be the fix. As far as the SuSEconfig changing you setup, that can be a real pain. It may be fighting with you over a path or other variable. You may do well to try to find what file is being changed. I have simply poked around looking for things like this. I'm not sure if Yast/SuSEconfig logs all of its actions. If it doesn't, it should! It may also help to do a 'set > setgood.txt' on the good configuration, and then run Yast and do a 'set > setbad.txt'. Then either compare the two files visually or with diff. That may show you what variables have changed. This whole configuratoin process in Linux/Unix is rather arcane, to be kind. I'm looking into building an LDAP database that holds configuration information. The nature of the endless sequence of scripts that execute when you log in is an exercise in GOTO hell programming. That is, it's chalked full of non-returning branch statements. It's 1970's style programming and needs to be fixed! HTH,
Thanks, that was it. There was no .xsession file in the /root directory. SuSE's Xfree4.0 rpm installs must have deleted it. It's the second time I tried 4.0 and the second time this has happened. I KNOW NOW!!! Thank you. I'll try your other sugestion tonight Mark Mark -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
