Good day, I'm -still- triying to setup a firewall for my home network using a old 486 Dx66. And i have one doubt: If i connect the external modem (sporter 33.600) to the Old 486 box throught serial port. That could decrease the speed of the modem vs a new mother board ?. (i read something abt UART's but i'm not sure). May somedody help me. Darn , they are slow , deleted some files of the 1/2 gig drive , now it wont reboot , it stops right after frreeing 44 K memeory , tring to get into inet??somothing I guess, with foot floppy it sats loading the kernal then stops with "error 0x10 I think. Any suggesti9on , or just reinstall ( Real Slooooww on this machine). even slower over 10 mbt network.easier then tearing down a second machine for the cdrom. Hello, All - ADSL is alive and kicking a$$ on my computer. Several of you wrote back with some really helpful suggestions, for which i thank you. Turned out to be a software problem, resolved by a change in dhcp client. Runs like a dream. This message was sent few days ago but no response so far. :-( ******************************************************* * Resend * Hi all, I just back to this list after a long break for exam. I have just subscribed to ADSL service. The provider use ATM to route the package into my PC, where the ATM card is connected to the external ADSL modem to the phone line. The ATM card used is from efficient network. The whole setup is only available in Win9x/NT. Which crash my system after few hours of surfing? (bad luck!) I have restored the OS but I have loss all the confident in M$ OS. Now, how can I setup the ATM card and allow ADSL to be use on my SuSE 6.2 PC? the PC is dual boot Linux/98 for the moment. Sorry for asking this question as I am newbie to Linux and have no knowledge on ATM technology. Pls give me some direction to start and if possible, I would like to use the SuSE PC as a router to share the bandwidth with my other 2 slower PC at home. They are all linked by 10/100 Ethernet but are not talking to each other under Linux but ok under WindozZ. Thank you for your expert advise in advance. Tear it down and rebuild it from scratch. You have a serious problem. I have four 486's running right now. They each took about an hour to set up, but they run great. I used one as a workstation for a couple weeks while my AMD K6-266 was sick. What , never heard of this before ?? Plan on trying a comlete os insytall from scratch , I probiblky will reseat all the cards, and drive cable before hand. One more try , if not , I will buckle and foind a P75 or tsomething. Its just takeing too much time. P166 can be set up in 20 minuets , much quicker , and it has pci slots for 100 Mgebit Ethernet.

I removed some stuff fromthe first section (You oknow , stuff you need) , So I think I must have tremoved some of the system files. IT boots uip fimne with the install disk , need to connect it to the network for cdrom access , I can tear it down agien and reseat the cars, Bu I had just done that and it was working fine. Only choked when I rebooted after removing/trimming down the packages. Will go at it over the weekendd agien

Be very selective about what you install. Keep your focus on what you are doing. If you are setting up a firewall, you don't need anything from x, xap, emacs, docs, tcl, etc. For everything else, if you don't know what it is, leave it in there on your first install and make sure it works. For anything you want to remove, read its documentation first, and if it doesn't have to do with routing/firewalling/booting or anything you may do with the firewall, remove it. Reboot to make sure you didn't kill your system - better to reboot now while you remember what you did so you can fix it rather than have your machine reboot 150 days later and have it not work and you have no idea why. Remember - keep your focus. The Linux Router Project puts a very functional Linux system on a single 1.44MB floppy, so you should be able to get it under 100 MB. I heartily recommend LRP. -- George Toft http://gtoft.dynip.com Hawaii Pacific University MSIS Graduate Student "Investigating the Effects of Organization Size, Industry, and Workgroup Size on Server Administration Costs and Downtime." -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Thats exactly what I did , and guess what , It woulden reboot. Looks like I got carried away and removed too much. Dou you know if the perl package is needed for yast and rcconfig(you know the script that goes off after yast does its thing

Your not kidding here , Good thing I did not wait. Will have to reinstall now. Let you know how it goes.

What you're looking to confirm is whether or not you're using 16550 based serial support chips (UART) - It's been a while, but I think UART stands for Universal Serial Receiver/Transmitter. Most (if not all) modern serial ports are driven by 16550's. There are older serial support chips known as the 16450 (AT class) and those that were around back in the PC/XT days ... 8250's? It's been too many years. :-) The 16550 chips contained memory for buffering data coming in and data going out so that if the machine was busy processing an interrupt, bits wouldn't get lost as they streamed in on the serial port. If the serial ports are directly on the motherboard for this family of motherboard, the chances are very good that you've got the 16550's. If you've got an ISA card (most likely a multi I-O/Multifunction card), if it's surface mount, it is also very like 16550 based. If you've got the old fashioned 40 pin socketed UART chips, you should be able to check the number on top of the chip to verify. Just look for '16550' buried in the numbering scheme. Back when I first started doing 9600+ bps modem connections, I purchased 16550's from National Semiconductor. The exact part number in that case was: NS16550AFN. In a nutshell: For a 486 66Mhz (most likely a DX2, not a DX), you should be fine. Check your boot log from when you fire up your machine, it should help you identify *exactly* what type of serial chips were found. Again, look for 16550. :-) Take care, Argentium -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
