As I understand it the search and launch activity is meant to be used only in "netbook mode". To change modes go System Settings -> Desktop -> Workspace -> Form Factor. The bug might be that you are allowed to add a search and launch activity in desktop mode.

Please note: I'm not bitching about Activities. I may not have Charles enthusiasm about them but I think they are OK.

I just want to know how to delete an activity when I don't want it any more. I can delete all my other activities but not the "Search and launch containment" activity.

It is quite annoying, because on the Search and Launch activity right-click is disabled. Try switching your plasma to netbook mode, you should be able to configure it then. I think one other way to do it is (with no windows open) Alt+D , then Alt+S. That opens the activity settings. Switch it to a different type of activity and then you should be able to remove it.
