[opensuse] Installing OpenSuSE 12.3 with text-to-speech during installation: I heard this was possible though I cannot find anything on the internet about it
Hi all, I'm emailing to ask if this is possible. My environment is as follows: Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop The installation will be performed via booting to a USB drive and then allowing it to format the hard drive during installation I will install Gnome and orca as my desktop environment (and either Speakup or YASR for the terminals) A friend of mine who deals with linux all the time said that a friend of his managed OpenSuSE installation with speech output, though he couldn't remember the command for it. Do any of you guys by any chance? Thanks! If You are installing from KDE/GNOME live CD/USB images, just the content of the image is installed to the computer. So I'd suppose, You have to use net CD or DVD images (it is possible to use them from USB stick). During installation You can choose desktop environment and later You can customize software. It is possible to add any other software, including any repository.
A friend of mine who deals with linux all the time said that a friend of his managed OpenSuSE installation with speech output, though he couldn't remember the command for it. Do any of you guys by any chance? Thanks!
Good luck, Vojtěch

sorry, i am not completely clear on your specific question: if it is: Is it possible to use text-to-speech (TTS) while installing openSUSE? then to the best of my knowledge, that capability is not built into the openSUSE installation process. If you would like to see it included i'd guess the best way to get that going would be via input to FATE at https://features.opensuse.org/ (if it is not already there...if it is there, just vote for it to be implemented...along with a few hundred of your close friends..) otherwise, ask your friend's friend what he used (and was it really openSUSE--i guess it was Knoppix with TTS available during install, i think his wife needs it) but if your question is: Can TTS software be added to openSUSE (once oS has been installed)? the answer is yes, there are several packages available...i believe one named 'festival' is easily installed using YaST or zypper from the standard openSUSE repos...and, there are MANY text-to-speech packages for linux of varying capabilities, and ease of use--Google know them all, i guess.. dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think it is a little tested feature, yes. Somewhere on first screen, I think, you toggle it on. I'm not sure what versions support it. I would have to do an installation looking for that feature in order to tell you exactly how to do it, and whether it works. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Speech output can be activated with F9, which is not documented, but in 12.3 it works only on the first screen, later when graphic mode kicks in there is no speech. I checked with KDE installation CD iso and DVD. There is no bug reports about that. That was experimental feature; dropped from recent versions, but obviously not completely. Maybe someone from development team knows more. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
