[opensuse] 11.1 network install
Can I take the dvd iso and copy the contents of it (unpack it?) to a folder to export via nfs without first burning it to a dvd and then copying the dvd contents to the same folder? I don't want just the iso image exported. L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why not just loop mount it? That way you don't have to unpack anything. When you loop mount the ISO, it appears just like a directory and can be exported. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

James, there is nothing you can unpack - the only way to access the contents of an ISO image is to 1oop mount it. Which I obviously do. /Per -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's not what your reply to the OP says. They were asking about copying or unpacking the ISO to a directory and you said that's what you do. That is not the same thing as loop mounting an ISO. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not unpack, you mount it using loop device - e.g. "mount -o ro,loop <isofile> opensuse-11.1" Then you export the mount point 'opensuse-11.1'. -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Then what? How does one use that for an install ... or repository? -- "Security is a chain within the infrastructure and is as secure as its weakest link. Boot the client from the net install cd or a usb stick or the dvd hit f4 and choose nfs. That's it. L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The option not mentioned is a PXE based boot if your network cards support PXE. The ISO image is loop mounted on a Server machine and machines boot from it across the network. (One interesting side effect is that the networked ISO image can be subsequently used for other operations). See... http://en.opensuse.org/SuSE_install_with_PXE_boot and the earlier/// http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Network_Installation_of_SuSE_Linux_via_PXE_Boot there was an issue with the tftpd setup when I tried it. (IIRC Under 10.2 tftpd RPM did not create the relevant tftpd account). - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Yeah, there's about a zillion different options - you could also boot PXE from a floppy or CD, retrieve the installation system over TFTP, and install like that. I have such a setup running for testing. I.e. for all the alphas and betas and different versions, to test one, I just plug in the floppy, boot the machine and select the system to install from a menu. It works very well. -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can then use the network install option of the boot disks. I believe there's a mini CD that can be used for this. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just did this (because Suse 11.0 and 11.1 is simply incapable of writing a dvd on my laptop! arggg...). I have a linux server in my crawlspace on which I stored the suse 11.1 dvd iso. I mounted the iso with something like the loopback command above. I then added the mountpoint for that dvd to my /etc/exports and reloaded the nfsserver (service nfsserver reload). I made sure I could mount it from another box.. aok. Then boot your network install cd without the ethernet cable plugged in and you will get an error connecting to the internet online repos. after that plug in the ethernet cable and go through the text panels to select a network install, configure an interface (dhcp works for me cause I have a dhcp server/router/dns server). Select the nfs install method, specify the nfs server and mountpoint and it should proceed as normal from there. all that said the online repositories have been very responsive and I'd just use them if I were you... wcn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Isn't all this documented in the openSUSE wiki? If not, I would suggest you update the wiki so that others can find this as well. I have not checked if it's there, but it's so old hat that it has to be. I'm sure there's a section on network booting/installing somewhere. /Per -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The easiest way is to loop mount the ISO, which can then be exported like any other directory. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
