Re: [SLE] supply and demand
I didn't really want to start a flame war again. Nobody doubts SuSE is great and works for us. I love it as much as the next but there is no denying they delay the ftp access and it is something I like to use basically weekly. In the past with Linux you could tell people: Linux is great you can get it in multiple ways. You can get the source online of course, because that is how open source products are developed. Or you can go to the store and buy it or go online and buy it. Well with SuSE this isn't true anymore in the traditional sense. I don't know but I foresee this much. In 2 years when almost everybody will have fast online connections more people will be using ftp installs than are today. I prefer ftp installs. People then will want to download a version from online and they will want the updating of security packages to go smooth. I suppose SuSE should invest into a utility which does improve the ftp access. The other day I was just thinking why SuSE does not put two copies of each version on ftp. One, the way they have it right now and another, where each outdated package will link to the more recent one in the updated packages directory. This way I don't have to install package xyz on a new install and then again install the newer xyz package. Why can't they just link to the newer one. Would save me a few minutes and make a fresh install a lot easier and less time consuming. Plus it prevents me from not being updated right away on a fresh install in case I missed something. One more thing can SuSE please add ip_masq_icq and ip_masq_h323, and whatever other mod they might have out there, to their custom kernels in the future??? mk

My personal view is: Yes, I will buy the Pro version (about $120 Australian). I still have the full set of 6.4, and will probably hand that over to one of my students as an encouragement award. I will probably then buy the upgrades for the next few releases. Why do I do this? I don't have a mission-critical setup, nor do I do a lot of hacking on new applications. I do this because it is my way of supporting the Open-Source movement. A few of the dollars I spend get used by SuSE to provide support for XFree etc, and that salves my conscience for me, when I am enjoying the work of so many others. Is it such an alien philosophy, that everyone gives a little willingly, so that all can enjoy the outcomes?
Amen! Many people just don't see past SuSE being a company I think. They forget that SuSE does a lot of open source development in the form of kernel patches, supporting new filesystems, advancing standards, Xfree86 development, KDE development, and so on.
