FTP Transfer Speeds...

When ever I FTP files from the internet over my DSL-connected Linux router box to my Windows machine, depending on the server, I can get a transfer rate of 120k/sec. When I FTP files from my Windows machine to one of my Linux boxes (running SuSE 6.3) the maximum speeds peaks at 35k/sec. If I'm not mistaken, 35k/sec is the maximum that can be reached with a 56k modem. Since none of my linux boxes are directly connected to the internet and I'm the only user, how I can I modify this restriction to allow faster transfers between my machines? Thanks! When I was using a 56K modem my ftp download would peak at about 4KBytes/Sec. Now that I am using ADSL, 384KBits/sec - tier 1, I can peak at about 40KBytes/sec during an ftp download, or about 80% efficiency. You have a pretty HOT 56K modem! <p>>

It might've been 3.5k/sec on a 56k modem. It's been a long time since I used a modem that slow. ;) However, if you connect to a server that has a fire hose connection, I been amazed at what download speeds I can get over a 56k or an ADSL modem. kilobits or kilobytes? 120kilobytes/sec is about what I get so I assume kilobytes. When I FTP files from my Windows machine to one of my

Again, kilobits or kilobytes and how are you measuring? 35 kilobytes for 56k is pretty much impossible, 35 kilobits would be a touch on the slow end so I assume kilobits. 35 kilobits is way too slow for 10MBps ethernet and 35 kilobytes/sec is still very slow for underutilized ethernet. Since none of my linux boxes are directly connected to the internet
and I'm the only user, how I can I modify this restriction to allow faster transfers between my machines?
We need more info. Are you talking about a home LAN? There is no restriction on either my Linux or OpenBSD box. I'm running at 100Mbps half-duplex and get about 6MBps via ftp. Greg
