Re: [SLE] Tim's Rant, Part II (The Response)
The full retail box is $80 and the upgrade is $50. Both contain the same CDs and DVD disk. The only difference is that the full retail box contains all the manuals and the upgrade box comes with and an update manual and other booklets. There lies the difference in price, not in the value of the raw materials, but in the effort put in writing those documents. The same goes for the distribution itself, you got to be kidding when you equate all the effort put in packaging it all together to the cost of the physical media. If monetary concerns prevent you from having the latest suse distribution, you don't have to upgrade. Downloading all the latest packages from suse for your current installation puts you on a par with the latest distribution, for free. They work hard in improving the installation process, supporting new hardware, and the overall system integration. They got to get the money to support all that effort. They will fire 120 people, the economy is going down worldwide. Expecting them to give away or under sell their work will ultimately result in their failure as a business. Other distros can do whatever they want. So, $50 is not a lot to ask, especially since it is your decision to get it or not and not something that gets shoved down your throat by a company in the west coast. Rafael
does not matter how much you say the price will not change buy if you like and if you dont like the price, dont buy please lets get to a better topic or go to the chat room To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards out of men. --Abraham Lincoln Key fingerprint = 5652 67CE 8A6E C26E 3799 68BF 4645 625E 2F92 4A26

You have a point, but I might also add that the raw materials for the six books in SuSE Pro probably cost a few bucks. If you combine all of that with the cost of writting the manuals plus 30 more days of support, and then subtract that from the overall price, it should lower it to less than $50 (at least if you think the SuSE reference books are any good).
The same goes for the distribution itself, you got to be kidding when you equate all the effort put in packaging it all together to the cost of the physical media.
No, that wasn't my point. The point was I figured (going high on the physical costs) that there was $40 beyond raw materials. Obviously a good portion of that goes to development costs, but I cannot comprehend the need for $40 in development costs per box - especially with open source.
If monetary concerns prevent you from having the latest suse distribution, you don't have to upgrade. Downloading all the latest packages from suse for your current installation puts you on a par with the latest distribution, for free.
Granted. My entire argument does not strike at the cost of $79 (usually closer to $59 or $69) for SuSE Pro. What it does go after is SuSE Upgrade, which after S&H (since it is not available in the retail channel) is only $10 bucks less for me. I'm sure you will agree that all of those great manuals and thirty days more support is worth more than $10 or even $20 - which is why I suggest that the upgrade costs too much.

Right.

Well, not to attack SuSE, but I think RedHat has a more solid grasp of what is going to make Linux companies money, at least until desktop adoption increases. What's that? Services, Services, and Services. The only successful Linux companies thus far, are Service-based companies. Charging money for open source software and hoping to stay solvent doesn't quite make sense, and never has, IMO.
So, $50 is not a lot to ask, especially since it is your decision to
No, it's not, I agree fully. The point, which I don't seem to communicate well enough, is simply that the sixty or so dollars I would end up spending to get the Upgrade after S&H doesn't make much sense if I can go to the store and pickup the full Professional version for no more than $10 extra dollars. -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R.
