[opensuse] More help with repos on upgrade from 13.2 to Leap
I added the Pacman 14.2 repo back to my system. When I perform a "zypper up" I receive: The following 82 package updates will NOT be installed: amarok amarok-lang fdupes ffmpeg gstreamer gstreamer-0_10 gstreamer-0_10-lang gstreamer-0_10-plugin-esd gstreamer-0_10-plugin-gnomevfs gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base-lang gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-lang gstreamer-lang gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-bad-lang gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-base-lang gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-good-lang gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-ugly-lang k3b k3b-devel k3b-lang libavcodec56 libavdevice56 libavfilter5 libavformat56 libavresample2 libavutil54 libchromaprint0 libgstallocators-1_0-0 libgstapp-0_10-0 libgstapp-1_0-0 libgstaudio-1_0-0 libgstbadbase-1_0-0 libgstbadvideo-1_0-0 libgstbasecamerabinsrc-1_0-0 libgstcodecparsers-1_0-0 libgstfft-1_0-0 libgstgl-1_0-0 libgstinterfaces-0_10-0 libgstmpegts-1_0-0 libgstpbutils-1_0-0 libgstphotography-1_0-0 libgstreamer-0_10-0 libgstreamer-1_0-0 libgstriff-1_0-0 libgstrtp-1_0-0 libgstrtsp-1_0-0 libgstsdp-1_0-0 libgsttag-1_0-0 libgsturidownloader-1_0-0 libgstvideo-1_0-0 libgstwayland-1_0-0 libmjpegutils-2_0-0 libopencv2_4 libpostproc53 libquicktime0 libsox3 libsoxr0 libstreamanalyzer0 libswresample1 libswscale3 libvlc5 libvlccore8 libxine2 libxine2-pulse mjpegtools sox typelib-1_0-Gst-1_0 typelib-1_0-GstAudio-1_0 typelib-1_0-GstPbutils-1_0 typelib-1_0-GstTag-1_0 typelib-1_0-GstVideo-1_0 vlc vlc-codecs vlc-gnome vlc-noX vlc-noX-lang vlc-qt These packages are all listed in Yast2 under the Packman repository. The heading in Yast2 says "Switch system packages to the versions in this repository(packman)". I do not wish to do that. Is there an easy way to eliminate the linkage between these files and packman. When I do an upgrade, and include the packman repository, it tries to download all of the packman versions. My goal is to get back to the base 42.1 system and just add a few things from packman, like k3b that knows about mp3 and other codecs. Looks to me like you are misreading something. When it tells you packages will NOT be installed, it means what it says, newer packages exist, but it's going to leave them where they are.
Is there an easy way to eliminate the linkage between these files and packman. When I do an upgrade, and include the packman repository, it tries to download all of the packman versions.
Depends what you mean by "upgrade" and "linkage". I think of update vs. upgrade as install bugfixes vs. replace old versions with later versions. YaST and Zypper remember where installed packages come from, and won't switch the repos they come from unless they know that's what you want. I find it easier to understand what will or won't happen by using Zypper. Unless you reconfigure zypper from its defaults, or add cmdline switches, zypper will not switch a package from one repo to some other repo.
My goal is to get back to the base 42.1 system and just add a few things from packman, like k3b that knows about mp3 and other codecs.
Get the packages you want from Packman either via YaST or Zypper, then lock them. After locking, disable Packman, then do your "upgrading", whatever upgrading means to you. With Packman disabled, no upgrades or anything else will come from it. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I wish to try again. I upgraded my 13.2 system to Leap 42.1. I believe the packages listed above are remnants of the 13.2 system. I will use amarok as an example. If I enter Yast2, and search for amarok, I get, under versions: 2.8.0-11.3-x86_64 from vendor openSUSE(installed). But the package is still listed under the packman repository, with an option to select 2.8.0-32.5-x86_64. I would like to eliminate all of the references to packman versions of openSUSE(installed) packages. There must be a file on my system someplace that retains the relationship between these previously installed packages, and packman. I would like to edit this file and remove the references to the above listed packages. The upgrade I referred to is performed using the distribution DVD and selecting the upgrade option. If I select the packman repository along with the 42.1 repos, it offers to reload all of these files with the packman version. Don, why should Opensuse break Yast just for you? Yast lists ALL the sources for any given package from ALL the repositories you have added. You seem to be asking them not to do that. To eliminate, arbitrarily packages from the list of optional sources based on some unknown magical thinking criteria. You might as well write Webster and have them drop every 20th word from the dictionary. If you don't like packages from the packman repository, then go to the Software Repositoriesitem in Yast and Delete, or Disable (uncheck) the Packman repository. OR, If you want to know in advance how many packages this will affect, Select the Repositories tab In Software Management, then click the Packman Repository on the left side window. ONLY the packman will be shown in the packages window. Once you uncheck the Enable box for packman in Software Repositories, then return to Spftware manageent, and you will see: Everything from packman that is actually installed will now show in RED making it easy for you to select them and upgrade/downgrade to the Opensuse repository source. Lots, but not all, of your multimedia packages will have limitations if you do this but at least seeing alternatives won't haunt you any more. Maybe I misunderstand, but I don't see why you are so fearful of alternative sources being listed, but it really bothers you STOP looking at the versions tab in Yast. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry for mistake. I was worried about all of the packages selected in packman, and how I would upgrade just k3b to packman. I had assumed, I guess incorrectly, that when I told it to do the install, all of the packman packages selected would be installed. I understood that the black check marks in Yast2 indicated that the package was installed. But the packages in the packman listing also have black check marks, even if the openSUSE versions are installed. If I select one with a black check mark and click on it, the check mark changes to a blue up-arrow. AS I stated above, I wanted to install k3b from packman and did not have any confidence what would happen. I use zypper to install k3b, so did not got a chance to perform the experiment. I performed a "zypper lu --all" and reached the same conclusion. Thanks for the clarification, and sorry to waste your time. And you did check to see what the "black check marks" and the "blue up-arrow" meant???? You are the administer of *your* system, unless you get someone else to maintain it. Part of an administer's job is to become familiar with and to discern the correct procedures to update, upgrade, install software, configure video/firewall/audio/..... One is not born with this knowledge and those providing you advise also had to spend time to learn. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
