Yes
Wow, impressive!
I thought so. If I hadn't posted the entire script to do it within the last two weeks, I would have added more. The archives will tell all.
I downloaded SuSE 10.0 and installed it on a partition of my Dell Inspiron 1200 running XP, Suse sets on 17GB and is very happy, I can access the net via Wired LAN to a D-Link Wireless Router. I bought a Dell 1350 WNIC with the computer and on the SuSE HCL it does not support Dell WNIC's. I have installed ndicwrapper and it is not working, I have installed kwifimanageran still nothing. I am running KDE desktop. Has anyone got a Dell 1350 to run or should I just go buy a WNIC that is listed in the HCL???? Thanks- Gregory D. Watts 931-498-4341\Cell931-260-0414 http://www.tasana.biz

I have this occasionally with a Logitech optical mouse, but it happens under 8.2, 9.3, and 10.0 . I assumed it was a hardware problem (ie. the surface I use instead of a mouse pad). Peter Taylor
This is my first time going all out with any Linux distro. I ran what was Mandrake about a year ago and never used it much, but I like SUSE much better. Do I need to run an AV program and spyware protection? These may sound like dumb questions, but I have no idea how well protected SUSE is on the Net. Thanks -- Gregory D. Audio Visual programs? That's your choice. Spyware protection? You really only need that with SpyGlass(MS IE). OK, I'm being a wiseguy. No. In general you do not need these kinds of protections. You should try to understand the Unix file system, and the concept of user permissions. Glance at the man page for chmod. If your eyes go crossed, and it all seems like gibberish from mid 1980's documentation, that's because it is. The system works, and it works well. Don't login as root, and everything should be fine. I'm sure there are other pointers people can add, but basically, Linux is secure because the developers of Unix and thence Linux were not stupid about the degree to which they were willing to cut corners for the sake of user convenience. BTW, I don't connect my workstation directly to the internet, and use a masquerading firewall. It would be nice if someone who does connect directly to the internet could address the firewall issues involved. Steven
"DOn't log in as root znd everything should be fine" Ok this is now an issue, for some reason during install I got to the update part duing install, it downloaded tons of stuff, this is listed before setting up users, after it got done downloading it rebooted before going to the next step, when it came back up I got the login screen, since I had set up no users I was stumped, then I put in root for user and the root password and I was in, so I get from this I need to fix this. Do I go into YaST>users and create a user? On Wednesday 16 November 2005 12:51 am, Steven T Hatton wrote:

<snip> When you login as root you can create a user identity for yourself.. in Yast , you go to the Yast Modules section and then to "security and users" where you add a user ( your new safe online id or whatever name you wish ) and a new non root password... that way if someone were to get your user password they still can't compremise your computer ... which is one real reason that so far no windows intended virus or worm has been anything more than an annoyance ( mail slows down sometimes because ISPs get infected ) .
W/o your root password, they can't actually do things they need to take over the system... When you as root create your user account you will find Suse defaut permissions will let you do most things.. for those you can't do easily , you really need to look at the documentation for chmod, or chown .. So that you can understand what is safe to use those commands on. ( they change the basic ownership of some things.. ) other things you do either from the commandline using enter sux and entering root password when asked.. they you are temporarily a root users.. but you can't do everything as su ... You will find as a user some things need to be run as root, online updates for instance.. but since you set the sytem up, you already know the root password, and can enter it when you need to do things that require it... -- j Morning, Evolution in action. only the grumpy will survive

And the first time posting here I can tell. Otherwise you would not have hijacked a thread... That's a no no around here.

You don't need to protect suse much. Spyware is pretty much un heard of in the Linux world. There are only one or two known worms that can infect Linux, and they need your help to do so. SuSE, unlike some other distros installs quite securely. It has almost everything turned off by default. So Don't turn anything you don't need on, such as Imapd or ftpd or any other services you don't want. Choose good passwords, because there are a few people trying dictionary attacks against ssh servers. General advice: If you have a firewall device, use it. If not, use SuSE's. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Unless you're running SuSE (ha!) as root, you should have little to fear. I wrote up a little blurb on this on my site. It was quite fun a few months ago at work. While some virus was running rampant on several thousand of our workstations and dozens of servers, my laptop and a few of my SLES servers were sitting happy and unaffected. -- kai www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part

About the only time you need AV in Linux is when you're running a mail or file server for Windows users. Even then, it's for their protection, not yours.

You'll need AV if you are running a mail server that forwards mail from Windows systems. You won't need spy-ware, or ad-ware software for Linux, and if IIRC there isn't any.

Having experienced something similar on my HP, I'd suggest experimenting with different drivers until you hit one that works. The Synaptics touchpad driver for my HP was really junky, so I went with a generic driver. That one does much better. -- ...Yogich
