Crazy CD Recorder Problem
Running a SCSI emulated cdr/rw and a dvd drive under SuSE8.2, I have been happily burning cd's using k3b since installation. Then yesterday, the strangest thing. About half way through burning a cd the process stopped, k3b froze and I had to skull & crossbones it to kill it. Ever since (and I have been as far as a warm reboot) I cannot get any medium recognised in the cdr/rw drive. I tried mounting a backup cd in the dvd/cdrom drive and it mounts from the desktop icon just fine. Put the same cd in the cdr/rw drive and I get an error saying "cannot mount drive - no medium found"! Any ideas as to what the hell has happened would be appreciated. I am down to assuming some sort of hardware failure, yet the drive still operates, ie it opens and closes etc. I have never had this problem before and would appreciate advice?! Paul.

I don't believe the optical head is connected to the motor which controls the tray. Check /var/log/messages and see if you get any meaningful error messages, but if it is as you say, that it just stopped in the middle of an operation and hasn't worked since, I'd say you're very likely right, it's broken on the hardware level

This happened to me when cdrdao crashed for some reason. Even warm rebooting didn't help, and after this happened my BIOS didn't pick up either my DVD or CD-RW drives. They were opviously stuck in some sort of no-access-to-anything-else mode. I had to switch off the power and power back on - this fixed it. Hope it helps Hans
