Can someone give a recommendation for a wireless 802.11b card that will work properly with my desktop computer running SuSE 8.2 Pro? I have a LinkSys WMP-11 wireless PCI card that works perfectly under Winders, but fails to operate in SuSE 8.2 Pro, even though it is recognized and configured. I seem to remember some time back that somebody recommended an Orinoco Silver or Gold Card with some sort of a PCMCIA to PCI adaptor. I lost that information. If someone can steer me to the correct make/model/manufacturer, I would be very grateful. I really want to get my SuSE 8.2 Pro box connected via 802.11b. Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards, Gary Kohtala

You have found out that Broadcom chipsets don't have Linux drivers. The problem is that Broadcom has pushed hard to become the leader of the 802.11g wireless market and their 802.11b (Wi-Fi) chips have pushed out the older Prism chipsets in the 802.11b market. Broadcom is hostile to Linux and have refused to help in anyway to support their chipset under Linux. There is a good list of chipsets in products at: http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters_supported_html3.html http://www.linuxcompatible.org/compat.php The one page that is the index of all knowledge wireless is: http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Wireless.html I would avoid the PCMCIA to PCI adaptor idea. It is hard to find and harder to get working right. It might be better to look at a USB connection adaptors. =========================================== You didn't say are you in the USA? What is available locally? I have seen a lot of Microsoft Wi-Fi USB adapters here which is based on the prism chipset, something that Microsoft is good for! I have also seen D-Link's DWL-520+ PCI card based upon the TI ACX 100 which has a binary only driver at: http://www.ivor.it/wireless/acx.html It is a pain to get a binary driver going and it could disappear in the future but if you can't find anything else it is an option. Then another option is always e-bay or other used equipment sources like ham swap meets etc. pben On Sunday 20 July 2003 05:49 am, Gary Kohtala wrote:

Maybe you should not give up so quickly. You say it "fails to operate". Could you be more verbose about that point? Also, could you send us the output of "hwinfo --network_ctrl"? Greetings from Bremen hartmut

I have to agree with Hartmut Meyer <hartmut.meyer@web.de about not giving up on your existing card. I do not use the LinkSys or even a PCI wlan card, but my Netgear 401 which other people had reported as automatic set with YaST was a royal pain to finally figure out. Be sure and review the SuSE guide for getting wireless cards to work: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wavelan.html To get my Netgear 401 to work with SuSE 8.2 I had to bind the orinco driver as discussed in the above SuSE guide. Then add module orinco_cs to /etc/modules.conf. Then use YaST to add the Netgear card as eth1 a wireless card. Then whenever the laptop is in use and I want to use the card then I do: sux password ifconfig eth1 up dhcpcd eth1 Perhaps these steps will help you with your LinkSys card p.s. You said that your LinkSys card fails to operate, but no details.
