RE: [SLE] Low framerate after upgrade to 8.1 (NVIDIA)
Well. I updated the kernel (no problems), but now I've lost 3D. I also tried the new nvidia drivers (4191), and what a mess. Every time I try to "test" a Sax2 configuration, or even to just "startx", the computer hangs w/ a black screen. Ctrl + alt + bksp does nothing. I have to do a hard reset. So I removed those drivers, accepted a "default" sax2 configuration and managed to get back into X. Next I went into Yast2 and enabled 3D, whereupon it told me I had to download the 3D drivers, etc. So I started YOU, but had lost of problems getting it to download the yast packagemanager update. This finally succeeded, but that's as far as I got(too late). BTW, when I had the 4191 drivers loaded, 3Ddiag said everything was fine. All the symlinks looked fine in /usr/lib. BUT, the nvidia.o module was not being loaded. I could load it with insmod or modprobe, but it would load it with a warning: it said it would "taint" the kernel because there was no GPL liscense. Anyway, even with it loaded, I still got the black screen hang. Also, there was nothing about nvidia in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. I am really getting sick of messing w/ nvidia drivers. It shouldn't be this hard. That's the extent of my rant...:) If anyone has some magic, I'd sure appreciate it! Cheers, Curtis. P.S. You actually got the k_athlon subversion *-199 to run the nvidia drivers? it would always fail for me - arghhh. Oh, the MX440 (aka GF4-MX420/440) is essentially a GF3 core - nVidia took a basting for the way the marketed and then subsequently lablelled this card in the GF4 series - it should have been and advance GF3-MX card (there were no MX series in the GF3 family - mx series went from GF2 to GH4 skipping the #3 family - it only has a couple of improvement - not a bad card but not really a GF4) On Monday 13 January 2003 10:40, Cleary_Mike@emc.com wrote:
I finally upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 last night - what a nightmare. I have several problems, but they'll be in different postings.
System: Athlon XP 1600+ k_athlon-2.4.19-199 kernel from Mantel Elitegroup KS75A motherboard 384 MB DDR memory AOpen GeForce4 MX 440 64MB(DDR) AGP video card Soundblaster Live! 5.1 60GB harddrive, CDRW, DVDROM
I finally got 3D working, but not very well. Sax2 basically fails every time I try to "test" a configuration - "No Screens" error. Even so, setting up 3D through Yast2 seemed to work. I am currently using the nvidia drivers found on the SuSE ftp site.
However, my fps in "gears" is only about 240. In SuSE 7.3 I was getting about 5000 - 6000 fps. Then, in 8.0 it dropped to about 1600 fps. Now it's down to 240 in 8.1. I don't like this trend.
3Ddiag says everything is fine. The only thing I can think of is maybe there is some problem w/ one of the libraries (i.e. libGL.so pointing to wrong place, etc.). I downloaded some 8.1 drivers from NVIDIA very late last night, but haven't had a chance to try them yet. If anyone has gotten this card (or similar one) to work well, I'd appreciated any hints/tips, etc.

it's from site www.nvidia.com .. excpert "...(sec-02) INSTALLING THE NVIDIA_KERNEL AND NVIDIA_GLX PACKAGES __________________________________________________________________________ BEFORE YOU BEGIN DRIVER INSTALLATION Before beginning the driver installation, you should exit the X server. In addition you should set your default run level so you will boot to console and not start up X (please consult the documentation that came with your Linux distribution if you are unsure how to do this). This will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the installation. Please note that package revision numbers have been omitted in the following directions to make them as general as possible. While the directions might say "NVIDIA_kernel.tar.gz" you should replace that with the name of the driver version you are installing; eg: "NVIDIA_kernel.1.0-2960.tar.gz". Once you have verified that you do indeed have the correct rpm, upgrade the NVIDIA_kernel package by doing: $ rpm -Uvh NVIDIA_kernel.i386.rpm You should not use the '-U' option to rpm to upgrade the NVIDIA_GLX rpm because a bug in the uninstall section of older NVIDIA rpms will cause some files to be removed that shouldn't be. Instead, use '-e' to remove the old NVIDIA_GLX rpm, and then install the new one: $ rpm -e NVIDIA_GLX $ rpm -ivh NVIDIA_GLX.i386.rpm ... "" any questions ? :)

Be sure that the nvidia drivers match your kernel

Look at your XF86Config file and see if it is trying to load the nv driver with 3D enabled. If so then change nv to nvidia and reboot. I had this similar issue
