[opensuse] Is it wise to do update all from 10.2 from Packman, Guru, Xorg7.2 etc?
Hello OpenSuse community, I recently came across a discussion in the archives about the problems of too generally updating a distro from non-official sources. In the past I wasn't aware of this and did regular "update all" in Smart with Packman, Guru, and Xorg7.2 repos enabled. In a long time the only breakage I *appeared* to suffer was with bluetooth which took me a while to puzzle out the cause of and downgrade to the standard version. I have since re-installed and so far stuck only to official updates, with the exception on adding the X11:/XGL repo to use Compiz Fusion. My question as a linux novice (and also one who gets a kick out of updating! A hangover perhaps, from MS days) is; if i go back to updating extensively from the 3rd party repos, how much harm vs improvement might i be doing? I would like to add that I realise this might be a difficult question to answer, and also perhaps a controversial one - so please - don't end up having too heated a debate about it. Thanks, David. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi David, if you don't force update despite complaint from package manager than it is usually OK. This assumes that package manager has no bugs. I use external repositories, but one package at the time, and I look at dependencies that will be updated. That way if something is broken it is easier to fix. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
